Silent Keys:
Peconic Amateur Radio Club reports the passing of Gene Schroer, KC2ZQL.
Gene left a unique mark on the events he participated in and the people he interacted with. His constructive contributions, both in ideas and actions, were significant and added to the success of these events. His absence leaves a void that will be hard to fill.
LIMARC and Nassau ARES report the passing of Gladys Stuart, KC2YFT. Gladys was very active until her first bout with cancer several years ago. It was difficult for her to attend the meeting but continued for some time to perform a Net Control for the Monday night ARES net. A second bout with cancer severely curtailed her activities and she eventually succumbed to the disease. She will be sorely missed

From the ARRL:
ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology Now Accepting Applications for 2025 Cohorts
12/13/2024
The ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology (TI) continues to grow. Fresh off a highly successful YouTube telethon that raised more than $41,000 for the program, some of next year’s dates have been announced. Applications are now open.
The program is growing, and educators will have the opportunity to attend sessions around the country. “We love having the teachers here at ARRL Headquarters, but we wanted to bring this program nationwide,” said ARRL Education and Learning Manager Steve Goodgame, K5ATA. Dates and details of the regional sessions are still being determined, but the hope is to touch many areas of the United States.
The application process is straightforward. Interested educators can find the web form at www.arrl.org/ti. ARRL covers all the costs of the TI, including travel, but there is a $100 application fee if the teacher is accepted.
The success generated from the program is demonstrable. “The teachers leave TI with energy and knowledge. They’ve taken that and built tremendous programs in their schools,” said Goodgame. The program isn’t necessarily designed to get young people licensed, but rather to get them thinking about radio in their other areas of study. Teachers work amateur radio and radio technology into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics lessons. Amateur radio is presented as a pathway to get hands-on with the concepts, and to use them in the real world.
There are 16 cohorts planned for the 2025 ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology. “The growth we’re seeing in TI is a result of the teachers’ experiences with the program, and the donors who enable it,” said Goodgame. The TI is funded entirely by donations to the ARRL Education & Technology Fund.

2025 Youth on the Air Camp Application Period Open
12/06/2024
Applications are now being accepted for campers interested in attending the 2025 Youth on the Air Camp. Licensed amateur radio operators, ages 15 through 25, who want to attend are encouraged to apply online at YouthOnTheAir.org. The camp is scheduled to take place June 15 – 20, 2025, in Thornton (Denver), Colorado and the Denver Radio Club, an ARRL Affiliated Club, is the local host.
The current application period is for the fifth camp for young amateur radio operators in North, Central, and South America. For the best chance at being selected, applications should be submitted by 2359Z on January 15, 2025. Campers will be selected by the working group and notified by February 1.
To encourage attendance from across the Americas, allocations for campers are being held open for various areas of North, Central, and South America. If countries do not use their allocation or should someone within an allocation decline acceptance, those positions will be filled from the remaining pool of applicants. As this will be an ongoing process, everyone will not receive notification of acceptance at the same time. Preference will be given to first-time attendees.
Applications will continue to be accepted through May 1 and up to 50 campers will be accepted. The application process is free, but a $100 USD deposit is required upon acceptance. Should a potential camper be unable to pay the $100 deposit, they may apply for a scholarship or waiver. Campers are also responsible for their own arrival and departure transportation to the camp location. Travel assistance may also be available, especially for those traveling from outside of the USA and Canada. Travel during camp events is provided.
For details about the camp, visit the camp web page at YouthOnTheAir.org or email Camp Director Neil Rapp, WB9VPG, at director@youthontheair.org.

$41,000+ Raised by Donors, YouTubers, for ARRL Teachers Institute
12/06/2024
A YouTube telethon to raise money for the ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology was a resounding success. More than $21,000 was contributed during the livestream, which unlocked another $20,000 that donors had set out as a challenge gift. ARRL Director of Development Kevin Beal, K8EAL, says that upped the ante. “It’s quite clear that even with the generosity of the donors in attendance, the challenge gift really pushed everyone until the end to meet that goal.” There were over 430 gifts made and the most frequent was $20.
The event, hosted by YouTuber Josh Nass, KI6NAZ, on his popular Ham Radio Crash Course channel, drew thousands of views. On the stream, several teachers and students who have benefited from the TI shared their stories of success. “We were glad that teachers Everton Henriques and Drew Mortenson joined us on the stream. Two of Everton’s students attended and were inspirational and impressive. They’re the whole reason why we’re doing this,” said Beal.
A face familiar to longtime ARRL members also paid a visit via video. Former ARRL President Kay Craigie, N3KN, shared her memories of the origins of the ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology, which she pioneered. “People have stepped up in just the most wonderful ways over the years. Large donations, small donations — whatever people are able to do — have made it possible to continue this program,” she told Beal in a video call.
Cragie attributed the program’s success to its flexibility and how it can evolve to meet the changing needs of educators. ARRL Education and Learning Manager Steve Goodgame, K5ATA, hopes to pivot the program again for 2025. “We’re taking it on the road. Historically, we’ve flown teachers into ARRL Headquarters (in Newington, Connecticut), but we want to go meet some of them where they are,” said Goodgame.
The program has lofty goals for expansion next year. In 2024, there were 7 cohorts – next year will have 16. “We’re grateful to everyone who participated in the livestream, whether they watched it, shared it, or donated to it,” said Goodgame. “They are enabling us to continue this growth.”
A replay of the live telethon can be seen at this link. If you’d like to contribute to the future of ARRL Teachers Institutes on Wireless Technology, visit www.arrl.org/GiveToSTEM.

Giving Tuesday: How You Can Impact ARRL and Amateur Radio
12/03/2024
ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio® is grateful to its members, who allow us to do the work on their behalf of promoting and protecting amateur radio and inspiring future generations to make ham radio and wireless technology a part of their lives. No one does more for amateur radio. ARRL is globally recognized by radio amateurs and the public for advancing amateur radio, through superior delivery of content, training, and licensing. Whether a ham is new to the hobby or an experienced contester, ARRL programs and services are there for you!
The work is supported by many generous donors. Some of them are part of the Maxim Society, but many more stand with ARRL through smaller gifts, as they can. Each donation makes a direct impact on this hobby we all serve and enjoy. We are deeply grateful for each gift.
Please consider the impact you can make on Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is a national campaign to support non-profits like ARRL. It’s a time during the busy holiday season to reflect on ways you can make an impact. ARRL would appreciate your consideration this year on Giving Tuesday. A gift, no matter what amount, would further enable the work we do. ARRL is investing in the future of amateur radio by inspiring and educating America’s youth in radio communications and technology. Through expansion of existing programs and the creation of curriculum-based initiatives targeted at middle and high school STEM education programs, ARRL is developing the next generation of radio amateurs.
Thank you for your consideration. We are thankful for you being an engaged member. If you’d like to support the ARRL Giving Tuesday campaign, you may do so at this link: www.arrl.org/giving-tuesday.

ARRL 2023 Annual Report Now Available
11/27/2024
ARRL® The National Association for Amateur Radio® has published its 2023 Annual Report, which includes a summary of the year’s program activities, along with the 2023 and 2022 financial statements and an independent auditor’s report.
ARRL marked 2023 as the Year of the Volunteers, recognizing the nearly 57,000 volunteers who contribute to supporting the organization and the wider amateur radio community. “The future of amateur radio rests on the shoulders of volunteers, and every one of us can be a volunteer,” said ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR, in his message in the annual report. The report highlights the involvement of volunteers across program areas, including ARRL Volunteer Examiners and Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES®) volunteers.
“It seems right for an organization like ours, which is fueled by volunteers, to take a moment to recognize the countless individuals who share their time, talent, and treasure with ARRL to advance the hobby we all love,” said ARRL Chief Executive Officer David A. Minster, NA2AA, in his included report. Minster also noted the celebration of the ARRL Foundation’s 50 years in 2023. Its work has benefited the charitable, educational and scientific efforts of the amateur radio community. Minster recognized the generous contributions from Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC), which renewed commitments amounting to more than $2.1 million to support club grants, education programs, and scholarships. “This represents the largest single commitment ever for our organizations,” said Minster.
Also included in the annual report is ARRL’s Report to America, which references the involvement of amateur radio operators during natural disasters that occurred in 2023, in addition to formal partnership agreements with served agencies including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). In May 2023, ARRL entered into an updated Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with FEMA, to enhance cooperation between ARES® and FEMA in providing disaster communications — When All Else Fails®.
The ARRL 2023 Annual Report is available for download at www.arrl.org/annual-reports.
Founded in 1914 as The American Radio Relay League, ARRL is a noncommercial organization that numbers within its ranks the vast majority of active radio amateurs (or “hams”) in the United States. ARRL’s mission is to promote and protect the art, science, and enjoyment of amateur radio, and to develop the next generation of radio amateurs. How to Let Kids Talk with Santa Over Ham Radio This Holiday Season
11/27/2024
Santa Claus will be on the amateur radio airwaves again this year.
The 3.916 Santa Net will be on the air every night at 7:00 PM CST from November 29 through December 24. Reserve a spot with Santa by making a pre-net check in. You can check in each night starting at 6:30 PM CST online at www.CQSanta.com.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be on the air, together, thanks to special arrangements with the Cowley (KS) County Amateur Radio Club. They will be on the air on the 147.000 repeater and the Sunflower Net system, between 10 a.m. and noon on November 30 and beginning at 10 a.m. on December 14 and 21. In addition to the local repeater, the Sunflower Net offers connection options to Allstar, DMR, Dstar, Echolink, Fusion, Hamshack Hotline, M17, and P25. The club is also setting up a radio link at the local library to talk to Santa.
Also, for the 4th year, Santa has sent Elf Chucky and his team of amateur radio operators to northern Colorado, to help make sure children of all ages can talk to Santa on station NØP from the North Pole. Thanks to the Longmont Amateur Radio Club and the Northern Colorado Amateur Radio Club, children can get into the holiday spirit by talking to Santa on the radio. Both are ARRL Affiliated Clubs. Get the details on that operation at https://w0eno.org/santa/.

Ed Menasian, N8LPQ Receives 2024 ARRL Technical Service Award
11/27/2024
Ed Menasian, N8LPQ, Toledo, Ohio, is the recipient of the 2024 ARRL Technical Service Award. He was presented the award plaque and motion certificate by ARRL Great Lakes Division Director Scott Yonally, N8SY, at a ceremony held November 23 at the Toledo Emergency Management Agency.
The ARRL Technical Service Award is given annually to one or more licensed radio amateurs whose service to the amateur community and/or society at large is of the most exemplary nature within the framework of amateur radio technical activities.
The award motion certificate presented to Menasian noted he exemplifies the spirit of the award through creating ways to learn and share technical information, including his weekly breakfast meetings and his licensing classes that train both prospective and current hams.
“It was a great day for me,” said Director Yonally. “A room full of his students each got up and did a short testimonial on how Ed has helped them in not only getting licensed, but also getting on the air, and how he encourages them to upgrade as well. What a day it was.” Yonally added, “ This is what being a member of ARRL is all about.”
Menasian has been licensed since 1981, holds a General Class license and has been an ARRL member for 13 years.
