Hello everyone,
| I hope everyone is having a good summer and enjoying the nice weather. We are getting some hot weather now with some days possibly reaching 100 degrees. So, make sure you keep hydrated and keep your eyes open for some fast-growing thunderstorms with heavy winds that usually accompany hot weather. That being said, make sure your equipment and antennas are secure and in good working order, Thunderstorms, flash flooding microbursts etc. can pop up at any time. Not to mention Hurricane season.
Also, with the heat and humidity, make sure you keep hydrated. I attended Sussex Amateur Radio Club’s Hamfest in Augusta N.J this past weekend and enjoyed meeting old friends and new ones as well. They have a large flea market with all sorts of ham radio related equipment from old to new. This is always a fun event. If you ever get a chance to go, do it, you won’t be disappointed. |

~ NYCARES participated in the Buckly 5k Run on June 14th all went well. Thay also participated in the CB3 Health Fair on Saturday June 20, 2026 and also the CB6 Health Fair on June 26th
~ Update from Don Fisher , EC Southold
I would like to thank all the Amateur Radio Operators who participated at the Shelter Island Run on Saturday, June 20th. It was a beautiful sunny day with low humidity and a little breeze along the course. We experienced no emergency events during the race that started at 5:30 PM. All stations were secured after the last Police SAGG vehicle passed at 6:50 PM. Shelter Island Supervisor, Ms. Amber Brach-Williams and Police Chief, James Read both thank the Amateur Radio Community for volunteering to be “the eyes and ears” of the footrace, an outstanding and well run annual event.
News of the week . . . . . . . . the long standing “H” frame tower at Hauppauge is going to come down. Just north of the LIE Exit 57, the tower property has been sold and land development is moving in . . . . . . . “the tower must go!”
For many, many years the tower held the Grumman Amateur Radio Club’s repeater: 145.330 MHz and the Grumman Club hosted the Monday night Suffolk County ARES Net. With the pending loss of the Grumman repeater site, the Peconic Amateur Radio Club has agreed to host the 9:00 PM Suffolk County Net on the 146.820, W2OQI Repeater at Manorville.
This move farther east will afford stations in Southold, Southampton and Shelter Island to check in to the Monday night net with a VHF Base Station. (Portables will not make the trip – Mobiles may need a good view of the western horizon.) You are invited to try and “hit the machine” on 146.820, offset -.600 MHz, PL 136.5 at 2100 Hours on Monday evenings. The Net does not meet if there is a “Monday Holiday.” If you can’t stay on the air for the entire Net, request “In and Out” when you identify yourself. This will give you and Net Control the knowledge that your radio can make the repeater.
Field Day:
I visited 10 sites in the Section over the Field Day Weekend and was impressed with everyone’s operation. The weather pretty much held with some spotty rain. There were many visitors at sites whereby members were talking about amateur radio and how it works. There was also a lot of interest in ham radio by younger kids, which was good to see.
I hope everyone had a good time. I know I did and I’m looking forward to next year.

~LIMARC Special Event Station K2CAM Remembered the 99th Anniversary of Charles Lindbergh Flying the Spirit of St. Louis to Paris in the First Transatlantic Flight. Intrepid LIMARC members joined forces with the Cradle of Aviation radio club to celebrate the 99th anniversary of the 1st transatlantic flight. The plane took off from Roosevelt Field (located very close to the Cradle Museum) in May 1927 and landed in LeBourget Airport, Paris 33.5 hours later. The Spirit of St. Louis was not equipped with radio navigation nor communications gear because it was heavy and unreliable as Lindbergh flew all alone during his flight. The HF radio station K2CAM setup in the museum had two operating stations: one was SSB and the other was digital.

Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club
July 25, Aug 29, Sept 26, Oct 31, Nov 28 Dec 29. All sessions are at the Town of Babylon EOC at 10 a.m., located in the basement in the rear of town hall. Please bring photo ID, a copy and your original amateur radio license (if you have one) and any CSCEs you may have. Nonprogrammable calculators are allowed. The exam fee is $15 payable by cash or a check made out to “ARRL VEC.”
Candidates are required to have an FRN number.

16-Year-Old ARRL Member Wins 2026 Student Coding Competition

ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio® is pleased to announce that member Ben Leovy, KC3ZPQ, of Ellicott City, Maryland, has been named the winner of the 2026 ARRL Student Coding Competition. Leovy, 16, recently completed his sophomore year at Howard High School. He designed a mobile application to help users prepare for their amateur radio license examinations.
Leovy will receive a $5,000 prize awarded by ARRL. His project was selected by a panel of judges based on usability, clarity, stability, and code quality. The judges also recognized his enthusiasm for software development and creativity by awarding him a new MacBook Neo to encourage his continued exploration of programming and technology.
“The ARRL Student Coding Competition was created to encourage young radio amateurs to apply their skills to a real-world opportunity that will benefit the amateur radio community and future entrants,” said ARRL Senior Director of Marketing and Innovation Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R. “Ben’s project demonstrated the kind of problem-solving skills and creativity that will help shape the future of amateur radio.”
The judges were also impressed with the strength of Leovy’s technical approach and the potential value of continuing its development. ARRL has offered him a consulting project this summer, to further refine and improve the application in collaboration with ARRL employees – an opportunity to gain professional experience. Upon successful completion of the project, Leovy will earn an additional $5,000. He will also be eligible for a $5,000 ARRL scholarship when he enrolls in college after high school.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to continue improving the application and working with ARRL,” said Leovy. “I hope it helps more people, particularly students my age, to get involved in amateur radio and to join ARRL.”
Leovy became interested in amateur radio through his grandfather and through friends involved with the scouts who shared an interest in the hobby. In addition to amateur radio and programming, Leovy participates in his school’s robotics club and enjoys exploring technology through hands-on projects.
The ARRL Student Coding Competition was launched in January 2026 as part of ARRL’s ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of radio amateurs. The competition encouraged ARRL Student members ages 21 and younger, who already have ham radio licenses, to combine their interests in amateur radio and software development.
“Programs like this help young people discover that amateur radio is more than a hobby — it is a pathway that inspires hands-on, practical, and technical experiences,” said ARRL CEO David Minster, NA2AA. “By investing in students and their ideas, ARRL is investing in the future of amateur radio.”
The competition is another ARRL program intended to develop student interest in future education and careers in STEM/STEAM fields. Other ongoing initiatives include the ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology, the ARRL Collegiate Amateur Radio Program, and the ARRL Foundation Scholarship Program.
The competition judges were ARRL First Vice President Kristen McIntyre, K6WX; Hudson Division Director Ed Wilson, N2XDD; previous Director of Education and Learning Steve Goodgame, K5ATA; ARRL VEC Manager Maria Somma, AB1FM; and Education & Learning Support Specialist Max Freedman, N4ML. Additional support was provided by past Pacific Division Director Anthony Marcin, W7XM.
Since 2024, ARRL Student Membership has been free for full-time students ages 21 and younger. This no-cost membership opportunity makes it easier for students to become involved in amateur radio and access ARRL resources while they explore radio, technology, and STEM-related learning opportunities.

Navigating an HOA and Returning to Amateur Radio and Field Day!

Fred Johnson, K6FRD, is an amateur radio operator in Riverside, California. Like many hams, he lives in an HOA-controlled neighborhood. For Johnson, finding practical, low-visibility, antenna solutions has become part of the fun over the years.
“For years I struggled to enjoy HF because, like many amateurs in an HOA, towers and conventional outdoor antennas simply aren’t an option,” said Johnson. “I tried several radios over the years, but without an effective antenna I rarely heard much activity and had very limited success making contacts. A few weeks ago, I decided to stop chasing radios and instead focus on building the best stealth antenna I could.”
Johnson said that after returning to HF last year, he enjoyed experimenting with antennas, portable operating, FT8, and station design to see what’s possible from a suburban backyard.
“The result is a simple 145-foot horizontal loop made from 14 AWG THHN wire, mounted on stainless cup hooks around the top of my backyard fences about six feet above the ground. The wire is insulated from the hooks with short pieces of clear vinyl tubing and is fed with a 4:1 current balun and approximately 25 feet of RG-8X coax. I also added ferrite chokes at both the antenna and radio ends of the feed line to help minimize common-mode current and noise.”
“The results have honestly exceeded my expectations,” he said. “My noise floor is typically only S1 to S2, allowing me to hear stations I would have completely missed before.”
ARRL Field Day 2026 gave Johnson a chance to operate entirely on battery power using his IC-7300 and his new antenna, making contacts on 10, 15, and 20 meters. Since installing the loop, he has worked 39 states, 24 countries, and stations throughout Japan, Hawaii, Samoa, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, South America, and across North America—all from his HOA backyard!
Johnson went on to say he hopes that sharing his successes, and the occasional lessons learned along the way, encourages other operators, especially those with HOA restrictions, to get on the air and enjoy this amazing hobby.

New ARRL Atlantic Division Vice Director

ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio® has announced the appointment of Ray Sokola, K9RS, of Wilmington, Delaware, as Vice Director for the ARRL Atlantic Division. The appointment, made by ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR, fills the vacancy created in January when former Vice Director Marty Newingham, AG3I, assumed the office of Atlantic Division Director. Sokola will serve the remainder of a term that expires December 31, 2026.
The Atlantic Division includes the ARRL Sections of Delaware, Eastern Pennsylvania, Western Pennsylvania, Maryland-DC, Northern New York, Western New York, and Southern New Jersey. Elections are held for five of the 15 ARRL Divisions each year, for terms of 3 years.

Call for Nominations for ARRL Director and Vice Director

Attention: Full ARRL members in the ATLANTIC, DAKOTA, DELTA, GREAT LAKES, and MIDWEST Divisions. You have the opportunity to choose a Director and Vice Director to represent you for 3-year terms beginning January 1, 2027.
ARRL is governed by its Board of Directors. A voting Director is chosen by ballot by the full (licensed) ARRL members in each of its 15 divisions. Vice Directors who serve in the absence of the Director at a Board meeting and succeed to the position of Director should a vacancy occur, are chosen at the same time. Elections are held in five divisions per year. It only takes 10 full members in a division to nominate a candidate for either office.
Qualifications
The eligibility of nominees for the positions of ARRL Director and Vice Director will be reviewed by the Ethics & Elections Committee, composed of three Directors not subject to election this year: Tom Frenaye, K1KI, Mark Tharp, KB7HDX, and John Litz, NZ6Q. A nominee must be at least 21 years old and must have been licensed and a full member of ARRL for a continuous term of at least 4 years immediately preceding nomination. Each nominee must provide information concerning their employment, ownership, investment interests, and other financial arrangements to ensure compliance with the Board Member Statement (see Article 12 of the ARRL Articles of Association and By-laws 18 – 24), available at www.arrl.org/general-information. The qualifications for Director and Vice Director are identical. All the powers of the Director are transferred to the Vice Director in the event of the Director’s resignation, recall, move outside the division, inability to serve, or death.
Nomination Procedure
Step 1: Obtain official nominating petition forms. Starting July 1, any full member residing in a division where there is an election may request an official nominating petition package in writing, either by letter or via email, to execadmin@arrl.org. The request must reach the ARRL Secretary no later than noon EDT on Friday, August 14, 2026. If you are seriously considering running or nominating someone to run, please don’t wait until the last minute to request the forms: the deadline for submitting a completed petition form is just one week later.
Step 2: Complete the questionnaire and obtain signatures. Only the official form may be used. The candidate must complete the questionnaire, providing the information required to determine eligibility, certifying its accuracy, and agreeing to assume the office if elected. To be valid, a nominating petition must name the candidate and must bear the signatures of 10 full members of the division.
Step 3: Submit the petition form. The completed form must reach the Secretary no later than noon EDT on Friday, August 21, 2026. The submission may be made by electronic transmission of images (i.e., a PDF or JPEG attachment to an e-mail) or facsimile provided that, upon request, the original documents are received by the Secretary within 7 days of the request. A person who is nominated for both Director and Vice Director may choose to decline the nomination for Director; otherwise, the nomination for Director will stand, and that for Vice Director will be void.
On Friday, August 28, 2026, the Secretary will notify each candidate of the name and call sign of each other candidate for the same office. Candidates will then have until Friday, September 11, 2026, to submit a 300-word statement and a photograph if they desire those to be made available to voters in accordance with instructions that will be supplied.
Balloting
If there is only one eligible candidate for an office, they will be declared elected by the Ethics & Elections Committee. If there is more than one eligible candidate for an office, the full members in that division who are in good standing as of September 10, 2026, will have the opportunity to cast ballots. Official voting documents will be mailed to members who are eligible to vote no later than October 19, 2026, and for those with valid email addresses on file with ARRL a follow-up email will be sent on October 26, 2026. Votes must be electronically cast by noon Eastern Time on Friday, November 20, 2026. The candidate receiving the most votes will be declared the winner that day.
Absentee Ballots
A full member who is residing temporarily outside his or her home division, including overseas, may arrange to vote in the home division by notifying the Secretary before September 6, 2026, giving their current mailing address as reflected in the ARRL membership records (i.e. QST mailing address) and the reason why another division is considered home. Members with overseas military addresses should take special note of this provision; in the absence of information received to the contrary, ballots will be sent to them based on their postal addresses.

As of now the frequency for all things NTS in NY is 3576. The alternate
freq. is usually 7042 kHz ± but 80 is starting to go long again, so if
you can get on top band, the alternate of 1807 kHz.

Due to construction at The American Red Cross in Mineola, our meetings will be virtual via Zoom until further notice.

Long Island CW Club:
LICW holds 75 classes and classes and forums weekly on Zoom covering CW instruction and many interesting topics on radio and related technology. The club has grown quickly to 3000 members in 50 states and 43 countries. LICW has local events such as portable outings and luncheons. More outings will be planned as Covid eventually eases. LICW has taught CW to over 350 kids with a number getting licenses. Programs for members with disabilities such as hearing impairments are available. Seeking new participants. A group of Long Island transmitter hunting
enthusiasts has been conducting hunts on Friday nights with an
occasional Sunday event and we are seeking new participants to join in
the fun. Anyone interested in learning more about the activity of radio
direction finding and radio fox hunting is invited to come out as
a hunter or rider. A LITHARC discussion group (Long Island Transmitter
Hunters ARC) has been established on Groups IO as a central
information and communications site.

appointment at his home in West Hempstead for card checking, and at all
LIDXA meetings. If some lives far from him, John is willing to meet them

Tom Carrubba, KA2D is also a DXCC card checker. Tom is also members of LIDXA and is usually available for DXCC QSL checking at the monthly LIDXA meetings (along with W2GW).
