Happy Father’s Day to all out there in radio land. I hope you have a great day with your families.
Are you ready for Field Day? Field Day is the ARRL’s National Emergency Preparation Exercise that takes place on the fourth full weekend in June. This year its June 27th and 28th. Hook up with your local club or operate on your own. It’s a perfect time to enjoy the HF bands and practice your emergency communication skills. I was happy to assist LIMARC and their VE team in testing a few students of Syosset High School who are seeking amateur radio licenses. I am happy to report that we had two that passed. The ones that didn’t will be retaking the exam shortly. Good luck to all and the Syosset High School Amateur Radio Club.
I understand that NYC ARES participated in the Jamaica Estates 5K run and the Totten 5K Run and all went well.

On Saturday June 20, 2026, Community Board 3 will be hosting a Health Fair for the Queens community. The purpose of our participation would be to educate the public on the functions of our organizations. For my part, I will educate the community about the services provided by Ham Radio Operators. The ARRL has been advised of mt intentions and provided me with flyers to distribute and educate, as well as a video explaining what Ham Radio is. The rest of the fair will be providing information and screenings for individuals who, at times, this would be the only health care available to them. My aim in extending this invitation to you is to show the community that there’s much more to the communities we live in and outreach possibilities.
We will provide services, education, and entertainment for attendees and offer free breakfast and lunch for all service providers. The setup time will be from 0800 to 1000 hrs, with closing at 1500 hrs.

World Cup Games Need Operators
Hi everyone,
I’ve been asked to help out on the upcoming World Cup games special event stations that are going on the air in 11 host US cities as well as Mexico and Canada throughout the competitions starting in June. I’m hoping some of you will want to be part of the NY/NJ area team since the World Cup soccer games are at the Meadowlands, right in our region. They are being hosted in cities around North America. I have been asked to build a team of about 15 ops and we need some enthusiastic activators – all modes! I promise it’s not a major commitment like other events can be sometimes.
Here are the details:
The NYC area is hosting the games at the Meadowlands. Dates of those games are June 13, 16, 22, 25, 27 and July 4. You don’t operate every day and you do not have to commit to every game.
ALL MODES – and very flexible operating schedule. Not every day, not every night. CONVNIENT.

Please bring photo ID, a copy and your original amateur radio license (if you have one) and any CSCEs you may have. Nonprogrammable calculators are allowed. The exam fee is $15 payable by cash or a check made out to “ARRL VEC.”

Washington Governor Highlights Amateur Radio Volunteers Ahead of ARRL Field Day

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has issued a video message recognizing the important role Amateur Radio Operators play in supporting communities across the state and encouraging public awareness of Amateur Radio as ARRL Field Day approaches later this month. In the video, Governor Ferguson highlights the critical service radio amateurs provide with communications support during emergencies and natural disasters when traditional communications systems may be disrupted.

The Governor’s message comes as Amateur Radio Operators across the United States and Canada prepare for ARRL Field Day, June 27 – 28, 2026, the largest annual on-the-air operating event in North America. Organized by ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio®, Field Day has been held annually since 1933 and demonstrates amateur radio’s ability to establish reliable communications under a wide range of conditions.
“During emergencies and natural disasters in Washington state, [hams] may provide one of the only forms of available communications,” said Governor Ferguson. “Field Day is a day for the public to see this communication in action with presentations and activities for all ages.”
The video was developed and produced by the Olympia Amateur Radio Society (OARS), an ARRL Special Service Club serving the Olympia and Thurston County area. Club leaders said the goal was to create a message that radio clubs throughout Washington can use to help educate the public about Amateur Radio and encourage participation in Field Day activities.
“Several months ago, we set out to partner with Governor Bob Ferguson to produce a short but meaningful video highlighting the vital contributions Amateur Radio Operators make to Washington residents every day,” said Doug Grover, N7POV, Director of Marketing and Communications for OARS. “We believe Field Day provides an excellent opportunity to amplify the message of Amateur Radio and emergency communications across our state.”
OARS will host its 2026 ARRL Field Day operation at Market Depot Park in Lacey, Washington, where hams will demonstrate emergency communications capabilities, offer hands-on activities for visitors, conduct license examinations, and showcase the technical and public service aspects of Amateur Radio.
The Governor’s message underscores the continuing importance of Amateur Radio as a volunteer-driven communications resource that serves communities before, during, and after emergencies. As clubs nationwide prepare for Field Day 2026, the video offers another opportunity to highlight Amateur Radio’s longstanding tradition of public service, technical innovation, and community engagement.

Find the Right Rig: New Comparison Tool for ARRL Members

ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio® is pleased to introduce a new member benefit: the QST Product Review Comparison Database. This online tool makes it easier to compare amateur radio transceivers, receivers, amplifiers, and transmitters by allowing users to sort and filter equipment based on their own selection criteria.
“This tool, introduced by the ARRL Lab, offers a familiar experience for anyone who has shopped online in recent years,” said ARRL Laboratory Manager George Spatta, W1GKS. “For decades, the Lab has been making standardized measurements that are published in QST Product Reviews. While those reviews have long been available online, finding and comparing products often required knowing exactly what you were looking for. The new database makes it much easier to discover and evaluate equipment based on the characteristics that matter most to you.”
The comparison database includes every ARRL Lab-tested device in the previously listed categories, dating back to 2012. Users can apply filters to narrow results to specific types of equipment and then sort products using select specifications and laboratory measurements. Multiple products can be selected and compared side by side, making it easier to evaluate options before making a purchase decision.
The tool has a lot of flexibility in the ways you can sort the data. Options include sorting the product name chronologically from newest to oldest published, and alphabetically. The data columns can be sorted by performance metric, and columns can be easily rearranged to display information in the order most useful to the user. If you know the name of the device you’d like to view, there is a search field available as well. When two or more products are selected for comparison, the results open in a new browser tab, allowing users to keep their place in the main database.
Whether you’re purchasing your first radio or considering an upgrade to your current station, the QST Product Review Comparison Database provides an objective, data-driven, customizable way to evaluate equipment. A companion guide explaining the various measurements and specifications is also planned to help members better understand the technical data when making an informed purchasing decision.

Registration is Open for the 2026 ARRL National Convention in Huntsville

ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio® and the Huntsville Hamfest will host the 2026 ARRL National Convention and Huntsville Hamfest, August 21 – 23, in Huntsville, Alabama.
The convention will kick off on Friday, August 21, with a series of day-long ARRL Training Tracks and a National Convention Luncheon at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Huntsville. Then join ARRL on Friday night for a very special National Convention Dinner under a full-size Saturn V rocket at the nearby U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Access to the museum is included along with dinner and special speakers. Proceeds benefit the ARRL Education & Technology Program, and additional sponsorships are available.
Registration is now open for Friday’s National Convention program. Registrants can select a Training Track (includes the luncheon) for $90. The National Convention Dinner at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center is $100, and includes dinner, museum, and a $25 tax-deductible donation to the Education & Technology Program. The National Convention Training Tracks are workshops providing an in-depth learning experience in one of the three Track topics. Attendees will select a Training Track when completing their online National Convention registration.
Training Track #1: Mini Contest University. This marks the first time Mini Contest University (CTU) is coming to Huntsville. Registrants will learn from some veteran amateur radio contesters. This Mini CTU will appeal to new and veteran contesters alike who are looking to hone their skills. Presenters cover general contest operations, contesting skills, and many resources and tools to get more out of contesting. The Mini CTU Track Leader is Tim Duffy, K3LR. Presenters TBD. This training is sponsored by DX Engineering.
Training Track #2: Emergency Communications Academy. Emergency Communications presenters will cover topics including Future Proofing ARES® — the ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Service®, PACE planning, relationship building, digital communications, emerging technologies, and other topics designed to enhance your emergency communications knowledge and preparedness. Participants will learn the skills and roles needed to become more effective volunteers.
Training Track #3: Salty Walt’s Portable Antenna Workshop. This workshop, led by Walt Hudson, K4OGO, with additional presenters, will feature practical information for portable antenna-building, deployment, and operating.
The rest of the celebration continues at the Huntsville Hamfest on Saturday and Sunday, August 22 – 23, at the Von Braun Center (South Hall), which is connected by sky bridge to the Embassy Suites. Known as “The World’s Friendliest Hamfest,” this air-conditioned all-indoor event attracts a large list of commercial exhibitors, notable forum presenters, flea market, youth activities, and W1AW America250 Special Event Station. Tickets for the Huntsville Hamfest are sold separately and are available now.

RAC Vice-President Brent Taylor, VY2HF, Silent Key

Radio Amateurs of Canada has received the sad news that RAC Vice-President Brent Taylor, VY2HF, became a Silent Key on May 21, 2026, at the age of 66.
The sudden loss of Brent has deeply shocked Radio Amateurs of Canada and the Amateur Radio community across Canada and beyond. RAC extends its sincere condolences to Brent’s wife Janice, his family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched through his years of service to Amateur Radio and public life.
Brent was first licensed in 1984 as VE1APG and received his partial HF privileges six months later after demonstrating successful CW operation. One year later he passed his Advanced examination and obtained the call sign VE1JH, a call he used for more than 20 years. After moving from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island in 2007, he acquired the call sign VY2HF.
Brent was widely respected for his dedication to Amateur Radio and his strong belief in supporting Amateur Radio organizations. He helped grow the Amateur Radio community in the Charlottetown area as an organizer and instructor for the Charlottetown Amateur Radio Club’s Basic Amateur courses.
Brent was a member of Radio Amateurs of Canada, the Charlottetown Amateur Radio Club, the International Repeater Group (NB), the American Radio Relay League, the Radio Society of Great Britain, AMSAT, the National Radio Club, and the Canadian International DX Club.
Outside Amateur Radio, Brent worked for the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs as Acting Manager of the Department’s Business Systems unit, with responsibility for the database that holds Veterans Affairs client information. Prior to that, he served for 10 years as a member of the Veterans Review and Appeal Board. Earlier in his career, Brent worked as an educator, radio broadcaster, newspaper columnist, and served one term (1991–1995) as a member of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick.
Over the years, Brent served the Amateur Radio community in many leadership roles. He was a Past-President of the Fredericton Amateur Radio Club and the New Brunswick Amateur Radio Association. He was also involved with the Canadian Amateur Radio Federation (CARF) and the Canadian Radio Relay League (CRRL) prior to their merger into Radio Amateurs of Canada.
In September 2020, Brent was appointed as a Trustee of the Canadian Amateur Radio Hall of Fame (CARHOF), representing Prince Edward Island for a three-year term. He also served on the Advisory Board of CARHOF and was a former member of RAC’s Exam Standards Committee.
Brent and I were elected and appointed as President and Vice-President in November 2024. As a former Vice-President myself, I had ideas about the direction I wanted to take RAC, and it was Brent who helped guide me in many decisions.
He was my rock within the organization – someone I could always bounce ideas off, and he would honestly tell me whether I was heading in the right direction or not, always providing solid reasons and thoughtful advice.
We were a team. I knew Brent always had my back, and he knew I had his. We had recently returned from Ottawa, where we worked together at RAC Headquarters discussing plans and ideas for the coming year.
His death has come as a tremendous shock and represents a deep personal and organizational loss – not only of a trusted colleague, but also of a close friend.
Brent Taylor, VY2HF, will never be forgotten by the Amateur Radio community and by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Senator Ted Cruz Praises Amateur Radio Volunteers for Emergency Preparedness

Senator Ted Cruz, in a strong pre-Memorial Day message, publicly highlighted the critical role that Amateur Radio Service volunteers play during disasters, praising and thanking ham radio operators who provide essential communications when storms and emergencies knock out power and cellular networks and communities are cut off. Sen. Cruz observed that in these emergencies it is ham radio operators who step forward, bringing with them the tools, expertise, and the commitment to reconnect people when it matters most. He noted this dedication was clearly demonstrated in 2017 when Hurricane Harvey’s catastrophic flooding devastated communities across Texas and that it was demonstrated again more recently in the horrific Camp Mystic floods. He emphasized that as the Nation prepares for yet another summer storm season, ham radio’s role remains just as vital as ever.

Stating that while future emergencies will come, Sen. Cruz pointed out that so would Amateur Radio — ready to respond, ready to serve, and to make a difference. He ended his statements, thanking ham radio for its courage and commitment, noting that Amateur Radio’s work strengthens our communities.
Senator Cruz is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. His comments align with the ARRL’s ongoing efforts to strengthen and protect Amateur Radio’s role in emergency preparedness and public service communications.
His comments also reflect growing Congressional recognition of the value Amateur Radio Operators bring to communities across the country. ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio® continues to advocate for legislation that protects and strengthens Amateur Radio’s role in emergency preparedness and public service communications.
ARRL’s nationwide grassroots campaign supporting the bipartisan Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act has generated more than 155,000 letters to members of Congress in support of H.R. 1094 and S. 459. The legislation seeks to ensure that Amateur Radio Operators can install and maintain effective outdoor antennas at residences where private land-use restrictions might otherwise prohibit them, helping communities maintain resilient emergency communications capabilities during disasters.
ARRL Legislative Committee Chairman and West Gulf Division Director John Robert Stratton, N5AUS, said the continued outreach effort has required “long hours on the ground and an uncountable number of personal meetings with Senators, Representatives, and their staffs” to raise awareness of the importance of Amateur Radio to the nation.
“The most recent proof that those efforts have, and are, increasing Congressional support for Amateur Radio is evidenced by the decision of Chairman Cruz to publicly share his personal views on the value and importance of Amateur Radio to the Nation,” Stratton said.

LICW holds 75 classes and classes and forums weekly on Zoom covering CW instruction and many interesting topics on radio and related technology. The club has grown quickly to 3000 members in 50 states and 43 countries. LICW has local events such as portable outings and luncheons. More outings will be planned as Covid eventually eases. LICW has taught CW to over 350 kids with a number getting licenses. Programs for members with disabilities such as hearing impairments are available. Seeking new participants. A group of Long Island transmitter hunting
enthusiasts has been conducting hunts on Friday nights with an
occasional Sunday event and we are seeking new participants to join in
the fun. Anyone interested in learning more about the activity of radio
direction finding and radio fox hunting is invited to come out as
a hunter or rider. A LITHARC discussion group (Long Island Transmitter
Hunters ARC) has been established on Groups IO as a central
information and communications site.
