Hello Everyone,
Well fall is here and the leaves are falling and it’s starting to get colder. Take these last few warm days and check that your antennas are in good shape. Hurricane season is not over yet and are winter storms will be here shortly. Make sure your prepared and that your radios are properly programmed. Check your “Go Bags” too.
It was a pretty busy month for the NLI Section with the Suffolk County Marathon, The American Cancer Society Walk, God’s Children’s Boat ride, the Totten Trot 5k run, the SET Drill out in Southold, the SES station in memory of Walter Grosser, W2TE , at Robert Moses Park, the LIMARC Hamfest plus some others. It was nice to see a lot of hams participating and having a good time.
By the end of this week we will know the results of the Hudson Division Director elections and who will lead us for the next 3 years.
The Ham Radio University Committee is looking for some additional committee members who may be able to bring some new ideas to HRU. If interested, Contact Tom, KA2D at tomka2d@gmail.com or me at w2kfv@arrl.org

2024 ARRL Field Day Results Published
11/08/2024
Results are published, and the numbers are in. They paint a picture of a very active 2024 ARRL Field Day. Nearly 1.3 million contacts were reported during the 24-hour event. That is up from 2023’s 1.25 million contacts. That’s likely indicative of the continued rise of Solar Cycle 25 leading up to the event, but more people also participated this year.
Entries were received from all 85 ARRL and Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) sections, as well as from 27 different countries from outside the US and Canada. “It is encouraging to see a rise in participation year to year,” said ARRL Contest Program Manager Paul Bourque, N1SFE. “ARRL Field Day is amateur radio’s premier event, and the hams turned out for it.”
Field Day is whatever you make it. For some participants, it’s a contest; for others, it’s a social gathering and club activity. Other groups use Field Day to showcase what amateur radio is all about to the public. Some groups use Field Day as an opportunity to introduce youths to amateur radio.
Class A, B, and C scores are included in the 2024 QST results article. The scores for Class D, E and F stations and club aggregate scores are listed in the 2024 line scores on the web, as well in the digital edition of QST.
Results are available now on the ARRL Field Day website at https://field-day.arrl.org/fdresults.php and in the December issue of QST.

Rare California Island to be Activated for Armed Forces Day, First Time in 53 Years
11/08/2024
On Armed Forces Day, May 1971, 53 years ago, two amateur operators working as WZ6SNI, activated San Nicolas Island, IOTA NA-066. At 61 miles, San Nicolas is the most remote of the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California and is owned by the US Navy.
Now, weather permitting, Will Costello, WC6DX, has been authorized to be active from San Nicolas Island November 8 – 12, 2024. He is taking a Buddihex antenna for 6 – 20 meters and a 100 watt rig.
For island chasers in southern California, Arizona, and southern Nevada who may not be able to hear because of skip, he will also take a Buddipole antenna for 40 – 30 meters daytime use. Operations will be primarily SSB, and CW if conditions deteriorate due to solar flares.
QSL instructions will be on WC6DX’s QRZ.com after the operation.

Amateur Radio Activated for Late Season Hurricane
11/08/2024
A rare November hurricane made landfall in western Cuba as a Category 3 storm Wednesday and continued to move slowly toward the northwest Thursday morning. Volunteer ham radio operators were there to provide surface reports to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Hurricane Rafael left Cuba’s 10 million residents without power and on Thursday afternoon was a Category 2 storm moving away from Cuba and heading northwest towards the Gulf of Mexico. Initial predictions showed the storm could have been headed for Florida and Louisiana, but all watches and warnings in those areas have been discontinued.
The Hurricane Watch Net (HWN), the VoIP Hurricane Net, and WX4NHC, the amateur radio station at the National Hurricane Center (NHC), were activated until Wednesday night but are now secured and continuing to monitor the storm.
The NHC predicts that Rafael should remain a hurricane for the next couple of days as it moves into a drier air mass in the south-central Gulf of Mexico this weekend and early next week.

Hurricane Rafael – Storm Updates
11/05/2024
Tuesday, November 5, 2024, 11:00 AM Eastern Update:
The following information is from the Hurricane Watch Net:
The Hurricane Watch Net will be activated today, Tuesday, as planned, with one minor update. After further review of the timing of the storm and the distance from land, we need to modify our plans. All will remain the same with the exception that we will now operate overnight
Activation Plans:
Tuesday, November 5, 2024
- 20 meters:14.325 MHz (USB) at 2:00 PM EST (1900 UTC) until at least 12:00 AM EST (0500 UTC).
- 40 meters:7.268 MHz (LSB) 7:00 PM EST (0000 UTC). We will remain active on this frequency throughout the day and overnight for as long as propagation allows. If propagation allows us to operate all night, we will suspend operations at 7:30 AM EST Wednesday to allow the Waterway Net to conduct their daily Net.
Wednesday, November 6, 2024
- 20 meters:14.325 MHz (USB) at 8:00 AM EST (1300 UTC) until at least 10:00 PM EST (0300 UTC).
- 40 meters:7.268 MHz (LSB) 7:00 PM EST (0000 UTC) until at least 10:00 PM EST (0300 UTC).
Other Nets that will be in operation are as follows:
- WX4NHC will be On-The-Air on the Hurricane Watch Net frequency 14.325 MHz most of the time and 7.268 MHz depending on propagation.
- WX4NHC will be on VoIP Hurricane Net (IRLP node 9219 / EchoLink WX-TALK Conference node 7203). http://www.voipwx.net/
WX4NHC will be monitoring WinLink and Online reports. WX4NHC@winlink.org

ARRL Recognizes University of Scranton During Amateur Radio Station Dedication
10/31/2024
The University of Scranton in Pennsylvania has a new amateur radio station, W3USR. A dedication was held at the university’s Loyola Science Center on Friday, October 25, 2024, led by Dr. Nathaniel Frissell, W2NAF, an associate professor of physics and electrical engineering, and club advisor for the University of Scranton Amateur Radio Club.
The new W3USR University of Scranton Amateur Radio Station supports the radio club, academic research, and the university’s outreach to the community. Frissell kicked off the dedication by framing the station’s purpose for education, research, service, and fun.
“With the establishment of your radio club and station, you’re not just creating a technical resource; you’re building a vibrant community of learners and innovators,” said Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R, the Director of Marketing and Innovation for ARRL® The National Association for Amateur Radio®. Inderbitzen is also a staff advisor the ARRL Collegiate Amateur Radio Program.
Club President Gerard Piccini, KD2ZHK, ceremonially handed an application for ARRL affiliation to Inderbitzen, who responded by presenting the University of Scranton Amateur Radio Club with a certificate as the newest ARRL Affiliated Club. Since its inception in 1918, the Affiliated Club Program has united amateur radio clubs to enhance the Amateur Radio Service, recognizing their crucial role in developing active radio operators and serving local communities.
“You are now part of a thriving network of college ham radio stations across the country, each contributing to a larger tapestry of knowledge, innovation, and fun,” said Inderbitzen.
Before the dedication, students provided tours of W3USR. Perched five stories up, the room committed to the new station is impressive for being well appointed with the latest amateur radio gear, but also for its panoramic views of the campus and city of Scranton. The station is equipped for HF, VHF, and UHF, and has capabilities for voice, CW, and digital modes, and for operating via the amateur satellites. Among the student tour guides were undergraduate students Piccini; Thomas Pisano, KE2BAC, the club’s Vice President; Alexandros Papadopoulos, KC3WUD, Secretary; James Fox, KE2ANL, Treasurer, and Owen Ruzanski, a freshman and new club member.
Guests were also guided to the roof of the science center for a closer look at the antennas, described by Jeff DePolo, WN3A. DePolo is the owner of Broadcast Sciences, LLC, which was responsible for designing and installing the station. A centerpiece of the antenna farm is a 40-foot tower with a DX Engineering Skyhawk Tri-Band Yagi for 20, 15, and 10 meters.
“One of the goals was to be able to install a tower without having to do any roof penetrations or anything structural as far as the roof goes,” said DePolo. A 200-foot crane was used to set the tower and antennas into place. The tower is attached to ten 12 x 12 steel tubes with 5/8-inch walls that are tied into the steel structure of the roof. The tower also includes an antenna for the W3USR 70-Centimenter repeater, and a fan dipole for 40 and 80 meters. Additional antennas are installed on mounts across the roof.
Most of the more than $200,000 of funding for the new station came from a generous grant from Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC), which has awarded many grants and scholarships supporting amateur radio and students pursuing higher education. Additional donations and support were made by Dr. Mary Lou West, KC2NMC; Ed Hayes, N6XEM (Class of ’61); Jeff DePolo, WN3A; DX Engineering, and The National Science Foundation (NSF).
The dedication ceremony included remarks from ARDC Executive Director Rosy Schechter, KJ7RYV; NSF Aeronomy Program Director Dr. Shikha Raizada, WP4PYE; The University of Scranton President Fr. Joseph Marina, and Interim Provost Dr. Tracy Stewart.
The ceremony concluded with a presentation of one of the many research projects pairing students with radio amateurs and scientists. Papadopoulos described programming techniques he and Piccini had learned in a DSP course which they used to automate the analysis of an HF time difference of arrival (TDOA) experiment conducted by Steve Cerwin, WA5FRF. Cerwin is a retired Institute Scientist at Southwest Research Institute where he designed custom electronic instrumentation and antenna systems. The experiment sought to identify multipath propagation modes between two HF stations by transmitting an audio chirp using conventional amateur radios and measuring the height of the F2 region of the ionosphere by sensing and analyzing the TDOA.
The University of Scranton Radio Club was established in 2020. Throughout its short tenure, the club has garnered the attention of the wider community of university amateur radio clubs for its success in developing student experiences with radio communications and wireless technology.
The ARRL Collegiate Amateur Radio Program is sponsored in part by the W1YSM Snyder Family Collegiate & ARRL Affiliated Club Endowment Fund, first established in 2017.

ARRL VEC Services Update During Systems Disruption
10/30/2024
Updated 10/30/2024
ARRL previously reported that we are responding to a serious incident involving access to our network and headquarters-based systems. Several services have been affected, including those administered by the ARRL Volunteer Examiner Coordinator (ARRL VEC).
Exam Registrations and Materials. ARRL Volunteer Examiners (VEs) should continue to submit exam registrations and material requests. We are able to post new or revised exam session dates and details to the website, we continue to ship out exam materials. Please remember that most exam materials are available on our website (www.arrl.org/resources-for-ves).
Processing Applications to the FCC and VE Session Counts Webpage. We are processing Amateur Radio License applications to the FCC. This includes applications for new and upgrade licenses, individual applications, and club license applications. The VEC exam session upload webpage was not affected by the incident. The VE session counts webpage data entry programming had been unavailable since May 12th. That part of our program’s systems became operational again mid-October. However, there is a 5 to 6 month backlog of session and VE participation data to enter into the system. It will take some time for the session counts page to reflect the data correctly but will be updated as quickly as we are able. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding, as we work our way through the backlog.
VE Accreditations, International Radio Permits and License Class Certificates. As of mid-October, we are able to create Volunteer Examiner (VE) badges, certificates, and stickers. New ARRL VE applications and accreditation renewals are also being processed at this time. International Amateur Radio Permits and License Class Certificates are being created and shipped.
VE Newsletter VE-List Server. The VE Newsletter email program has been unavailable since the security incident in May. New subscribers cannot be added and existing information cannot be updated. Please check back in with us when we have access to that program system.
2024 – 2028 Extra Class Exam Booklets. A previous version of this story indicated that the ARRL VEC will supply its officially appointed, field-stocked VE team leaders with the new Extra-class exam booklet designs around mid-June. Due to ARRL’s recent system disruption, the shipment was delayed. The exam booklets were shipped out July 8 and should be have been delivered before August 1. VE Teams may contact the ARRL VEC to receive instructions on how to print new Extra exams in the interim. The newly revised pool must be used for Extra-class license exams starting July 1, 2024. Exam designs based off the previous pool are no longer valid. The outdated versions of the Extra exams should be destroyed or thrown away to avoid a mix-up at the testing session.
ARRL Youth Licensing Grant Program | FCC Application Fee Reimbursement Information. ARRL is continuing to accept reimbursement forms to cover the one-time $35 application fee for new license candidates younger than 18-years of age for tests administered under the auspices of the ARRL VEC. Reimbursement checks may take longer than normal to be processed at this time.
We appreciate your patience as ARRL continues to work on restoring access to affected systems and services.
This story will be updated with new developments.
