Hello everyone,
Happy spring! The perfect time to think about Field Day, POTA and other ham radio events that you can enjoy. It’s also a good time to answer questions from people in the field when they ask, “What are you doing?” Have a short one- or two-minute answer. Ask them if they want to learn. Have some information to hand out about amateur radio and your club. Invite them to a club meeting or one of your outings. Hand some QSL cards out. You never know what may pique their interest.
We have made some changes in the section as some people have stepped up. In Suffolk County, Joe Schierer, KC2BZB, stepped up to become Section Emergency Coordinator.
Taking Joe’s place as Brookhaven EC is Joe Isbell, KE2NK, Joe is also well versed and we be able to make the transition easily.
Taking over as District Emergency Coordinator for Suffolk County, is David Wagner, KC2RCE. David comes with a list of credentials and has some great ideas moving forward.
John Melfi, W2HCB. had a full plate as President of GSBARC, and Emergency Coordinator for the Town of Babylon. Eventually I got him to fill in temporarily, after the tragic loss of N2NFI. As Suffolk County DEC. For 1 ½ years of filling in. John did a yeoman’s job. I hope it will be a little easier for him now that he doesn’t have to worry about the DEC job, especially the paperwork. He can concentrate on Babylon EC and President of GSBARC. Congratulations John.
We also have a new Technical Coordinator for the NLI Section. Steve Schuck, WB2WAK. Steve is taking over from another Steve, Steve Barrares, K2CX. Steve B. has not been feeling that good lately and we wish him well. Steve S. is very well known through the section. He maintains many repeaters and is always available to lend a hand.
I thank everyone for their service and wish everyone the best of everything as we move forward.

World Cup Games Need Operators
HI everyone,
I’ve been asked to help out on the upcoming World Cup games special event stations that are going on the air in 11 host US cities as well as Mexico and Canada throughout the competitions starting in June. I’m hoping some of you will want to be part of the NY/NJ area team since the World Cup soccer games are at the Meadowlands, right in our region. They are being hosted in cities around North America. I have been asked to build a team of about 15 ops and we need some enthusiastic activators – all modes! I promise it’s not a major commitment like other events can be sometimes.
Here are the details:
The NYC area is hosting the games at the Meadowlands. Dates of those games are June 13, 16, 22, 25, 27 and July 4. You don’t operate every day and you do not have to commit to every game.
ALL MODES – and very flexible operating schedule. Not every day, not every night. CONVNIENT.
Please DM me privately or email me – and say “YES!” Please?

From the ARRL:
ARRL Announces Change in Central Division Leadership
04/10/2026
Brent Walls, N9BA, has resigned as Central Division Director of ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio®, citing professional and personal commitments. He served as Director since 2025, and before that as Vice Director beginning in 2021.
“Serving in the capacity of Division Director has been a truly rewarding experience and the highlight of my amateur radio journey,” said Walls in a message to ARRL members in the Division. “Whether supporting emergency communications, fostering technical growth, or strengthening our community connections, the ARRL plays an important part, and I am proud to have been part of it.”
Consistent with ARRL’s governing documents, Joshua Long, W9HT, of New Haven, Indiana, who has served as Vice Director since 2025, has assumed the office of Central Division Director, effective immediately. ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR, will appoint a successor as Vice Director for the remaining term, which expires in 2027.
The Central Division includes Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. ARRL is governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors. Elections are held for five of the 15 ARRL Divisions each year, for terms of 3 years.

Register Now for the 2026 ARRL Youth Rally at Dayton Hamvention®
04/10/2026
Get ready for amateur radio’s biggest annual gathering! Dayton Hamvention® 2026 will take place May 15 – 17 at the Greene County Fair and Expo Center in Xenia, Ohio.
General Chairman Brian Markland, N8UDQ, said volunteers are working hard to make this the best show yet. This year’s theme is Radio Adventure.
“Radio Adventure has always been about exploration — of ideas, technologies, distances, and possibilities. From the earliest spark-gap pioneers to today’s digital experimenters, satellite operators, contesters, emergency communicators, and outdoor enthusiasts, amateur radio continues to be a gateway to discovery,” said Markland.
Among the activities taking place is the ARRL Youth Rally, returning on Saturday, May 16. The rally is designed for students ages 11 to 21 and offers a great opportunity to connect with other young hams. Youth Rally activities will be led by ARRL Director of Education and Learning Steve Goodgame, K5ATA, and volunteers from the ARRL Collegiate Amateur Radio Program (CARP).
Advance registration is recommended. While Hamvention admission is already free for students (high school and younger), the $20 Youth Rally registration fee includes a T-shirt (to be worn on Saturday), badge and lanyard, reusable tote bag, and a complimentary three-day Hamvention admission ticket (Friday through Sunday).
Students will enjoy an afternoon of hands-on activities, learning, and fun. Highlights include satellite communications, a short sprint contest, a fox hunt, and a chance to make contact with a parachute-mobile station. Attendees are encouraged to bring a 2-meter handheld radio if you have one.
The Youth Rally will be followed by the ARRL Collegiate Amateur Radio Meetup.
For more information about the Youth Rally and registration, and to find other ARRL activities and exhibits at Hamvention, visit www.arrl.org/dayton-hamvention-2026. For Hamvention information and general admission tickets, visit hamvention.org.

Elecraft Donates Amateur Radio Station to W1AW
04/09/2026
ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio® has welcomed a new high-performance Elecraft station to Studio 3 at W1AW, the Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Station, at its headquarters in Newington, Connecticut.
Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Watsonville, California, Elecraft produces high-performance amateur radio equipment available both factory-assembled and as kits. Its product line spans ultra-portable to full-featured desktop stations and is widely used by operators ranging from Parks on the Air® (POTA) activators to DXpedition teams.
Elecraft Co-founder Eric Swartz, WA6HHQ, visited ARRL Headquarters on April 7, 2026, to formally present the station. ARRL staff, including CEO David Minster, NA2AA, were on hand to receive the equipment.
The station includes the K4D transceiver with built-in KAT4 automatic antenna tuner, KPA1500 1500+ watt solid-state amplifier, and companion accessories including the K-Pod control panel, KPAK3AUX cable interface, MH4 hand microphone, and SP4 speakers.
The K4D supports full remote operation, allowing control from another K4, a software application, or Elecraft’s K4/0 Remote Panel. Its peer-to-peer architecture enables straightforward remote setup without reliance on a centralized server.
“We’re pleased to support ARRL and W1AW with this station,” said Swartz. “W1AW is an important destination for radio amateurs, and we’re glad members and other visitors will have the opportunity to get on the air using Elecraft gear.”
Through partnerships with manufacturers, W1AW offers operators the opportunity to get on the air using a wide range of modern stations under one of the most recognized call signs in amateur radio.
During his visit, Swartz also met with ARRL Senior Lab Engineer Rick Ciervo, W1CIE, and Digital RF Engineer John McAuliffe, W1DRF. Swartz is a key member of the ARRL Clean Signal Initiative (CSI) Working Group, which is developing technical standards to improve transmitter and amplifier signal purity. CSI is a program of the ARRL Technical Standards Committee.
“We’re grateful to Eric and to Elecraft for their continued support of ARRL and the Amateur Radio Service,” said Minster.

ARISS Outlines Opportunities for Space Station Contacts in 2027
04/03/2026
The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program is seeking formal and informal educational institutions and organizations, individually or working together, to host an amateur radio contact with a crew member on board the ISS.
Crew members will participate in scheduled amateur radio contacts. These radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes in length and allow students to interact with the astronauts through a question-and-answer session.
ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between January 1 and June 30, 2027. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan.
The deadline to submit a proposal is May 22, 2026, 11:59 PM Pacific Time. Proposal information and necessary details are at ariss-usa.org/proposal-overview/.
An ARISS Introductory Webinar session will be held April 30 at 8 PM ET. The Zoom link to sign up is: us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/3yid9dxzRkmYfVroIP0nWA.
An ARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via amateur radio between astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms and communities. ARISS contacts afford education audiences the opportunity to learn firsthand from astronauts what it is like to live and work in space and to learn about space research conducted on the ISS. Students also will have an opportunity to learn about satellite communication, wireless technology, and radio science. Because of the nature of human spaceflight and the complexity of scheduling activities aboard the ISS, organizations must demonstrate flexibility to accommodate changes in dates and times of the radio contact.
Amateur radio organizations around the world, with the support of NASA and space agencies in Russia, Canada, Japan, and Europe present educational organizations with this opportunity. The ham radio organizations’ volunteer efforts provide the equipment and operational support to enable communication between crew on the ISS and students around the world using amateur radio. Please direct any questions to education@ariss-usa.org.
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) is a cooperative venture of international amateur radio societies and the space agencies that support the International Space Station (ISS). In the United States, sponsors are ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio, Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC), Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation program (SCaN) and the ISS National Lab—Space Station Explorers.

Start Planning for ARRL Field Day 2026
03/13/2026
It’s not too early to gear up and get ready for ARRL Field Day! Field Day 2026 takes place June 27 – 28 and will bring together more than 30,000 amateur radio operators for one of the most popular on-the-air events in the US and Canada.
This year’s Field Day theme is “Amateur Radio: A National Resource.” Combined with the ARRL Year of the Club, it provides the perfect opportunity for radio clubs to set up stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science, skill, and service to our communities and our nation.
All of the information you need to get started can be found on the Field Day web page, including how to join the ARRL Field Day Facebook Group, where you can share your plans, tips, and tricks for a successful Field Day.
The overall objective for Field Day is to contact as many stations as possible on the 160-, 80-, 40-, 20-,15- and 10-meter HF bands, as well as all bands above 50 MHz, and to learn to operate in less than optimal conditions. Many clubs choose to set up in camp-style fashion with portable equipment, temporary antennas, and off-grid power sources.
Field Day is open to all amateurs in the areas covered by the ARRL/RAC Field Organizations and countries within IARU Region 2 (North and South America). DX stations residing in other regions may be contacted for credit, but are not eligible to submit entries. Each claimed contact must include contemporaneous direct initiation by the operator on both sides of the contact. Initiation of a contact may be either locally or by remote.
Also check out the Field Day site locator page to help find participating stations near you. As an added incentive for anyone participating in ARRL’s yearlong America250 Worked All States (WAS) Award, contacts made with ARRL Affiliated Radio Clubs all year, including during Field Day, will count toward your America250 WAS Affiliated Club Endorsement. Check out those details at www.arrl.org/america250-was.
For more information about ARRL Field Day, visit www.arrl.org/field-day.
