Hello Everyone,
I just returned from Florida after a few days and brought back some warmer weather. Perfect timing to double check your antennas to make sure they are good to go, for contest season or maybe build and string a new antenna. Don’t forget to check your connectors. Make sure they are clean and tightly secured. Also check your coax for possible wear or UV breakdown.
A lot is going on this summer between POTA’s , Special Events , Field Day etc. Let’s try and promote amateur radio as much as we can to the public. Have a promotional 45 second or minute statement to tell people what amateur radio is about when your out in the public view.
Well, the big weekend is here. Hamvention in Xenia Ohio. I hope everyone who is going has a great time and finds those items they have been looking for. This Hamfest should be on everyone’s bucket list. This year I could not make it, but hopefully next year.
Belated Happy Mother’s Day greetings to all Mom’s out there and XYL’s. I hope you had a great day. I also wish a belated Happy Passover and Happy Easter to all.
IMPORTANT:
All clubs, please send your Presidents name and contact information to me at W2KFV@arrl.org or my Affiliated Club Coordinator, Richie Cetron, K2KNB, K2KNB@arrl.net.
This information is important so we can compile the correct information for the ARRL concerning your club. Also please make sure your information is correct on the ARRL Big Club Page.
We also should be starting to plan for Field Day which is June 28th and 29th this year. Another great way to showcase Amateur Radio. The Field Day Rules and Field Day Station Locator are on line now.
PIO’s should start looking for alerts from the ARRL for Field Day soon.
The latest ARRL Members Bulletin (see link below) talks about the league’s response to the FCC on numerous topics, some of which have been sitting on the FCC desk for a long time with no movement.
An amateur radio activity report will soon be available for any club, group or individual to gather information on your activities. For example: A club or group likes to go out on POTA events, run training sessions, building projects, JOTA etc. We would like to know what you’re doing. An active club is a happy club.

From the ARRL:
ARRL Renews Defense of the 902-928 MHz Amateur Radio Band
05/14/2025
ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio® in a recent filing encouraged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to listen to industry stakeholders about the detrimental impacts that changes to the 902-928 MHz band would have for current users.
The FCC is considering a petition by NextNav, Inc., a licensee in the 900-MHz Location and Monitoring Service (LMS), to reconfigure the 902-928 MHz band to obtain more spectrum for itself and replace the LMS with high-power 5G cellular and related positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services that would supplement GPS. ARRL filed comments opposing NextNav’s proposal in September 2024.
Read more: NextNav’s proposal on ARRL News (8/15/2024)
Read more: ARRL Defends 902-928 Amateur Radio Band (9/12/2024)
ARRL’s latest filing [PDF] was submitted on May 13, 2025, by the association’s Washington Counsel in response to an inquiry initiated by the Commission to consider more broadly ways to improve and harden GPS. ARRL’s response echoes concerns of many others and underscores the need to improve and harden the current GPS system in a manner that doesn’t impact radio amateurs and other users of the 902-928 MHz band. The band supports an extraordinary number of unlicensed consumer devices used by consumers both inside and outside the United States with which radio amateurs co-exist.
ARRL strongly agrees with the many parties that point out in the record of this proceeding that, in working with its sister federal agencies on this issue, one of the Commission’s primary goals should be to ensure that existing services already operating in the spectrum, such as in the crowded 902-928 MHz band, should not be disrupted by complementary PNT if equal or better means are available. Many billions of unlicensed devices are in use to provide hundreds of applications and functionalities to the American public, and the number of devices and the functionalities that they provide continue to grow.
These devices coexist with amateur radio operations in the 902-928 MHz band but they as well as amateur radio operations would be displaced if a 5G-like PNT service was authorized to use this spectrum.
In the instant proceeding the FCC addresses GPS concerns holistically that also are being addressed by multiple other federal government agencies under the direction of the President. ARRL emphasized the FCC’s expertise and role in making the best use of the spectrum resource.
We commend the Commission for initiating this proceeding to take a holistic approach to the problem and possible solutions thereto, rather than a piece-meal approach that might have led to systems that would unnecessarily use valuable spectrum with inferior results and take years longer to construct from scratch. The Commission is the civilian spectrum expert among the collection of agencies that are addressing this issue. We rely on the Commission to make clear the value of each megahertz of spectrum and the trade-offs in designating any particular band for the purpose of complementary PNT.
ARRL’s filing is intended to emphasize the public interest in protecting amateur and others’ access to the 902-928 MHz band and to highlight that other, less disruptive options are available for PNT.
ARRL will continue to defend amateur access to this and other threatened amateur allocations.

Promote Your Club’s 2025 ARRL Field Day With Posters:
05/09/2025
2025 ARRL Field Day will be here before you know it! We’re just 7 weeks away from ham radio’s biggest event, held each year on the 4th full weekend of June (28 – 29 for 2025). The theme of “Radio Connects” highlights the many ways amateur radio makes connections.
As radio amateurs, we know the excitement of the weekend: it’s part get-together, part emergency communications exercise, part operating event. It is also amateur radio’s time to shine and welcome the public to learn about and experience this wonderful hobby.
A major aspect of any successful ARRL Field Day operation is the publicity and outreach: How can the public learn about the event if they don’t know it is happening? The ARRL Public Relations and Outreach Committee recently held a publicity workshop for public information volunteers. One of the tools presented is the 2025 ARRL Field Day Poster. It can be posted around your area (think libraries, bulletin boards, community centers, etc.) with your event information filled in on it.
The 11×17” poster is available as a free download [PDF] or available for purchase in packs of 25 from the ARRL Store. It tells the story of amateur radio as fun hobby, resource for public service, and tool for inspiring the next generation of technical leaders by providing a hands-on sandbox where students gain experience in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
ARRL Public Relations and Outreach Manager Sierra Harrop, W5DX, says now is a great time to plaster the posters around your community. “The summer tends to be a busy time with weddings, travel, and other activities. Get your club’s ARRL Field Day activities in front of people now with the posters so they can plan to be there.”
Check out all the resources for ARRL Field Day at www.arrl.org/FieldDay.

Johns Hopkins University to Hold ARRL Teachers Institute:
05/09/2025
A session of the ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology (TI) is being hosted this summer by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Maryland. This marks the first time a major research university has hosted the ARRL program.
The TI program is expanding significantly in 2025. Already, an institute was held on Staten Island, New York, to mark the first regional session. Sessions in Texas and the southeastern US are scheduled for the year as well.
Working with Johns Hopkins University is a result of ARRL Education and Learning Manager Steve Goodgame, K5ATA, exhibiting the program at the National Science Teachers Association conference in Philadelphia this past March. Representatives from the university saw Goodgame’s presentation on the impact amateur radio can have on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) curriculum. “This is a huge win to have a name like Johns Hopkins interested in the work we are doing,” said Goodgame. “We are hoping to partner with them frequently to hold more sessions, license teachers, and inspire kids.”
Part of ARRL’s mission is to inspire the next generation of radio amateurs, but the TI takes it further, Goodgame added. “This isn’t just about getting a group of teens licensed – it’s about making young people think about how radio and wireless technology impact our world and integrate into the industrial landscape of tomorrow.”
The ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology is funded entirely by donations to the ARRL Education and Technology Fund. Learn more about the program at www.arrl.org/ti.

Heritage CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame Inductees Named:
05/02/2025
The Heritage CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame, created by longtime amateur radio publisher Richard Ross, K2MGA (SK), will continue to honor amateur radio operators on a new section of the Hamgallery.com website.
CQ magazine ceased publication in October 2023. Ross died on April 27, 2024, and the change was made with the permission of his widow, Cathy.
The Heritage CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame honors licensed amateur radio operators, and non-licensed individuals, who have made significant contributions to amateur radio, their professional careers, or to another aspect of world affairs. A select and diverse group of amateurs will administer the new website and review submissions.
The 2025 inductees are:
Professor Jim Breakall, WA3FET. Dr. Breakall’s work has been instrumental in amateur radio antenna technology development for decades. Dr. Breakall has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific articles and books. He is an IEEE Life Fellow, a Radio Club of America (RCA) Fellow, and has been awarded the Sarnoff Award, the Dr. Ulrich L. Rohde Technical Award, at the RCA, and the Technical Achievement Award at the Dayton Hamvention®.
Angel M. Vazquez, WP3R. Vazquez graduated from the City University of New York. He worked at WNYC as a radio engineer before moving back to Arecibo, Puerto Rico and taking a job at the Arecibo Observatory in 1977, rising to become head of telescope operations. He has presented numerous talks on the Arecibo Observatory and his amateur radio experiences at the Dayton Hamvention® Antenna Forums, RCA Speaker series, HamSci conventions, and multiple amateur radio clubs around the world. He was awarded Puerto Rico Amateur of the Year in 2017.
Wayne Overbeck, Ph.D., N6NB (SK). Overbeck was co-inventor of the Quagi antenna, which is part quad, part Yagi. He was active in amateur radio for over 68 year, was a communications law professor and textbook author as well as an accomplished DXer and contester.
The nomination deadline for 2025 has passed but information can be found at Nomination Process for Heritage CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame.
