2025 World Amateur Radio Day is April 18
What: Ham Radio Open House for World Amateur Radio Day 2025
Who: All amateur radio operators worldwide
When: WARD is Friday, April 18, 2025, at 0000 UTC until Saturday, April 19, 2025 at 0000 UTC but the Ham Radio Open House can be held any time in April, as works best for your local club.
Where: A global event covering all regions of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU)
Why: World Amateur Radio Day, held on April 18 each year, is celebrated worldwide by radio amateurs and their national associations which are organized as member-societies of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU). It was on this day in 1925 that the IARU was formed in Paris. American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Co-Founder Hiram Percy Maxim was its first president. A major theme for 2025 is celebrating 100 years of IARU.
How:
Get Ready for “Ham Radio Open House” for World Amateur Radio Day 2025
To help promote amateur radio science and technology, and to honor the 100th anniversary of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU), ARRL is inviting radio clubs and schools to organize a Ham Radio Open House in April, centered around World Amateur Radio Day on April 18, 2025. The event is intended to highlight the Amateur Radio Service for its development and practice of the latest radio communications and technology, and as a hands-on pathway into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields for the next generation. In April 2025, amateur radio clubs, school stations, and other groups will have the opportunity to advance public knowledge about ham radio by welcoming their communities into their stations for the Ham Radio Open House, around World Amateur Radio Day. The focus will be on scientific advancement and demonstrating cutting-edge technology. This is a chance to not only shape the conversation about modern ham radio but also to show how it serves as a steppingstone and testbed for many young people pursing future STEM education and high-tech careers.
One Million Acts of Science
ARRL has teamed up with HamSCI — Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation — and the science community organization SciStarter to invite the public to participate in One Million Acts of Science during April, which is Citizen Science Month. By hosting a Ham Radio Open House at your group’s station on April 18, you’ll introduce individuals who might never otherwise find out about today’s amateur radio where science and technology intersect with fun and learning. Clubs are encouraged to showcase the latest weak-signal modes, such as FT8 using WSJT-X or other digital modes. This could be a great opportunity to explore new areas of amateur radio and demonstrate how the service is at the cutting edge of electrical engineering.
HamSCI and SciStarter Collaborations
HamSCI (hamsci.org) has built a community by connecting radio amateurs and citizen scientists in ionospheric research. The Solar Eclipse QSO Parties held during the 2023 annular eclipse and the 2024 total solar eclipse provided significant data for researchers studying the ionosphere’s response to the eclipses, wrapped into fun operating events. SciStarter is working to engage people from all walks of life in one million acts of science during Citizen Science Month in April (scistarter.org/citizensciencemonth), to promote public participation in scientific research. ARRL’s Ham Radio Open House provides a unique opportunity to help achieve that goal.
Imagine your open house visitors seeing a Software-Defined Radio (SDR) waterfall display and then hearing what the signal they see on the screen sounds like—that’s an act of science! Taking it a step further, let them take a Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) measurement of an antenna, modify it slightly, and take another reading. They’ve just gathered data, made a physical change, and measured the impact of their modifications. Not only is that an additional act of science, but it’s also a great way to engage people in hands-on learning about ham radio. With this kind of involvement, visitors will be more likely to return for a club meeting or participate in future events. Clubs will be asked to track those acts of science and submit a report to ARRL detailing the number of acts and the total number of visitors.
Amateur radio experimenters were the first to discover that the short-wave spectrum could support long-distance radio signal propagation. In the rush to use these shorter wavelengths, amateur radio was “in grave danger of being pushed aside,” the IARU’s history has noted. Amateur Radio pioneers met in Paris in 1925 and created the IARU to promote the interests of amateur radio worldwide and to protect and enhance its spectrum privileges. Today, the IARU is a federation consisting of more than 160 national amateur radio organizations in as many countries and separate territories. The International Secretariat of the IARU is ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio® in the United States.
On World Amateur Radio Day, all radio amateurs are invited to take to the airwaves to enjoy our global friendship with other amateurs, and to show our skills and capabilities to the public.
World Amateur Radio Day is not a contest but rather an opportunity to “talk” about the value of amateur radio to the public and our fellow amateur colleagues. It is also a great opportunity to talk about your radio club and amateur radio in local media as a lead-up to ARRL Field Day (held each year during the fourth full weekend in June) and another ham radio related activity in your community – such as volunteers who serve in local emergency communication readiness including the ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Service®.
Here are just a few ways to participate in, and promote, World Amateur Radio Day:
- Get a station on the air! Create your own personal “event” to talk about amateur radio to others, including family and friends.
- Find out more about World Amateur Radio Day by checking the IARU website and other Resources listed below.
- Create and hold a special net or on-air event on World Amateur Radio Day to raise the level of attention for the celebration, and to encourage other hams to talk about our hobby. Consider creating and offering a commemorative certificate for contacting your special activation. It can be an electronic one as these are cost effective.
- Get the word out! If you are an ARRL Public Information Coordinator, Public Information Officer, or responsible for radio club publicity, send a press release and conduct some public relations outreach to highlight the day and/or events. Talk about all of the activities radio amateurs have continued to support during the pandemic, and how amateur radio serves our communities. Find recent examples of amateur radio in-the-news at arrl.org/media-hits.
- Promote your personal World Amateur Radio Day activity(ies) on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook by using the hashtag #WorldAmateurRadioDay. Make sure you send it to various clubs, reflectors, and media.
Join us in celebrating World Amateur Radio Day and all the ways amateur radio brings us together!

Effort to Save Marconi Towers in Canada – Public Invited to Vote on Project
04/10/2025
There’s an effort underway to save some of Marconi’s original towers, and an online poll is open for people to vote on it being a restoration project through the “Next Great Save” project from the National Trust for Canada.
Some of Marconi’s first messages were received and transmitted using the Battle Harbour Marconi Towers, thought to be the last of their kind standing in North America. News of Admiral Robert Peary’s 1909 North Pole expedition was transmitted by these towers. After 100 years, the twin towers are in need of repair.
To honor 150 years since Marconi’s birth, there are a number of events planned around the world to observe Marconi’s birthday and International Marconi Day.
In the United States, from the Port of Baltimore, Maryland, the Nuclear Ship Savannah Amateur Radio Club will operate K3S on April 26 from 1330 – 2100Z. Check spotting networks for frequency. See QRZ.com info for Savannah Award qrz.com/db/k3s. A QSL card is available by contacting Ulis Fleming, 980 Patuxent Rd, Odenton, MD 21113.
The Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club in Babylon, New York, will operate W2GSB from the Babylon Village Historical Society Museum for Marconi Day on April 26, 1300 – 2030Z. Frequencies include 28.340, 21.250, 14.246, and 7.245 MHZ.

Interesting ARRL Ham Radio Open House Locations
04/10/2025
ARRL Ham Radio Open Houses are happening all over the Western Hemisphere, and more dates are being added by clubs each week. April 18 is World Amateur Radio Day and this year celebrates 100 years since the International Amateur Radio Union was founded in Paris. ARRL Founder Hiram Percy Maxim, W1AW, served as the first president of IARU, and ARRL still serves as the International Secretariat for the global organization.
Amateur radio was truly remarkable 100 years ago – anyone could communicate around the planet. The world was suddenly within reach of anyone who would seek to learn about radio. Much as the marvel of the airwaves was cutting edge then, so too are the technologies being developed and enjoyed by hams today.
From weak signal modes that represent the bleeding edge of electrical engineering, to robust digital mesh networks using amateur allocations, to modern tools that facilitate easier use of Morse code that was used by the pioneers of the Amateur Radio Service, ham radio is as exciting as ever.
ARRL Ham Radio Open House events provide an opportunity to connect the public with that story of modern technology. It allows them to see firsthand how ham radio is a pathway to careers for the next generation of technology leaders.
There are some interesting sites hosting ARRL Ham Radio Open House events. The Vintage Radio and Communications Museum, W1VCM, in Windsor, Connecticut, will welcome guests to theirs on April 18. The museum is host to exhibits that show off the developments in communications through the decades, from the 1800s to the late 20th century. Many of the volunteers at the museum are active hams and are able to relay how foundational evolution of gear and technology was for the modern, digital, amateur radio landscape.
New England Sci-Tech in Natick, Massachusetts, W1STR, is also hosting an open house on April 18. This maker space workshop and science center engages young people with outreach programs and gets members of the public hands-on with many science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) projects. They have an active amateur radio club among all the excitement.
On the other end of North America, the Arctic Amateur Radio Experimenters, KL7EX, will be hosting an Open House in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Find a site near you, or list your club’s ARRL Ham Radio Open House at www.arrl.org/Open-House.

ARRL Iowa Section Wins Ham Exemption to Handsfree Law
04/09/2025
ARRL volunteers in the Iowa Section have cause to celebrate. Their state-level advocacy work on behalf of amateur radio has resulted in an exemption to the state’s handsfree law that covers ham operators.
Iowa Senate File 22 (SF22), a bill addressing distracted driving, had been in development since 2020. Former ARRL Section Manager Lelia Garner, WAØUIG, and Iowa Section State Government Liaison Alan Erickson, WBØOAV, played a crucial role in fostering and maintaining key legislative relationships. Over the course of five years, they navigated the legislative process to ensure the continued exemption for amateur radio operators.
The COVID-19 pandemic and political opposition to the measure ground the bill to a halt, but the ARRL Iowa Section volunteers continued to engage in the process and ensure that amateur radio was represented as the legislature finally took the bill back up. The final language of the bill included, “The provisions of this subsection do not apply to … A person using a two-way radio transmitter or receiver who is licensed with the federal communications commission in amateur radio service.”
Being proactive about sharing the good work amateur radio operators do was key. “We presented a carefully crafted exemption proposal, backed by evidence of our contributions as a radio service,” said Garner.
The texting bill (SF22) passed the Iowa Senate with a vote of 47-1 on March 18, 2025, and the Iowa House passed it on March 26, 2025 with a vote 54-11. On April 2, 2025, it was signed by Governor Kim Reynolds and goes into effect July 1, 2025.
The process encouraged Erickson. “Every legislator I spoke with appreciated the public service that licensed amateur radio provides. They also acknowledged the responsibility demonstrated by amateur radio operators. I was impressed by their willingness to exempt amateur radio from their texting bill, and was also humbled that we have a duty to preserve this awesome reputation.”

ARRL DXCC Statement on Mount Athos Operation SV1GA/A
04/04/2025
The ARRL DXCC Desk has determined that the operation by a DXpedition team from Mount Athos meets the DXCC award program’s accreditation criteria. Contacts with the team, which operated in January 2025 using the call sign SV1GA/A, will therefore count toward DXCC. Additionally, due to actions taken by local authorities that resulted in the early termination of the operation, any future operations by this team from Mt. Athos will require additional documentation for securing accreditation for DXCC credit.
Mount Athos is an autonomous region of northeastern Greece, governed by the monastic community, and is an entity on the DXCC List.

HamSCI Call for Operators and Monitors 2025
04/04/2025
HamSCI, Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation, is preparing now for a series of meteor scatter (MS) experiments later this year and need amateur radio operators to help.
While the target storms are in August (Perseids) and December (Geminids) preparation and testing is already underway. This is a combination ‘special event’ and a contest to generate contact data during meteor scatter events using 10 meters and 6 meters. 2025 contest rules will be released shortly.
To be successful, this effort needs operators, both active and passive. Operators are needed to be active (calling CQ) on MSK144 or passive, if possible, reporting via PSK Reporter as ‘monitors’.
The best times are early morning hours prior to 10M opening to F2 propagation. Meteor scatter propagation occurs well below F2 and is supported in or near the E layer where the meteor ionization tracks occur. Saturday mornings are being used regularly to announce and coordinate 10M contacts using Ping Jockey Central. Announcements are also made on the Front Range Six Meter groups.io due to the substantial number of meteor scatter operators in that group.
The upcoming April-Lyrids shower is an excellent time to set up your equipment and join with other operators preparing for the events later this year. If you do not have the time to be active, at least set up passive reporting. PSK Reporter currently has scarce 10M MSK144 monitors; so we need to increase those numbers during the early morning hours. Eventually, the HamSci team will be collecting operator contact information, but for now, all that is required is for participants to report through PSK Reporter. For more information on the operating guidelines for the activity, please visit Meteor Scatter QSO Party Guidelines | HamSCI .
HamSCI serves as a means for fostering collaboration between professional researchers and amateur radio operators. It assists in developing and maintaining standards and agreements between all people and organizations involved. Its goals are to advance scientific research and understanding through amateur radio activities, encourage the development of modern technologies to support this research and provide educational opportunities for the amateur community and the public.

ARRL is excited to announce that the new 2025 edition of The ARRL Repeater Directory® is now powered by RepeaterBook, amateur radio’s worldwide repeater database.
“This collaboration ensures that amateur radio operators across the country have access to one of the most comprehensive and up-to-date collections of repeater information available,” said Garrett Dow, KD6KPC, of RepeaterBook.
Dow points out that a paper book is an invaluable resource When All Else Fails®. “In emergencies, reliable communication can make all the difference. RepeaterBook data in The Repeater Directory helps ensure that first responders, ARES® teams, and everyday hams have fast access to the most accurate repeater info when it matters most,” he said.
For decades, The ARRL Repeater Directory has been an invaluable source for locating repeater frequencies while traveling. It includes “crowdsourced” listings contributed to RepeaterBook by users, repeater owners, and volunteer frequency coordinators. This means more listings updated more often.
New hams often use the Repeater Directory to find local repeaters to use after purchasing a new handheld radio. Public service volunteers often keep a copy nearby or in their emergency go-kit.
The ARRL Repeater Directory is a convenient 6 × 9 inches and sports a lay-flat spiral binding. It includes:
- 22,319 listings for US and Canada, organized by state/province, county, and city/town.
- A location indicator for many repeaters in cities/towns.
- Additional information on ARES® and SKYWARN® affiliation, emergency power, and more.
- Digital repeaters including System Fusion, D-STAR®, DMR, NXDN, M17, Tetra, and P25 systems.
- HF, VHF/UHF, and microwave band plans.
