Hello Everyone,
We are at the beginning of the holiday season, and all the stores are packed with holiday goodies.
Lights are going up, and kids are getting excited. We have even had some snow, albeit only flurries, but it makes you wonder what lies ahead. Make sure your snow removal equipment is in top shape and ready to go. New wiper blades on your vehicles, top off your washer fluid, maybe ad a shovel, deicer and blankets to your “Go Bag”. You never know.
Don’t forget that HRU will be here shortly January 10th to be exact. The committee has been working very hard to make this event great. See the information below and all the updated information on the HRU website at www.HamRadioUniversity.org
Our feature speaker is Adrian KO8SCA who will be talking about the trials and tribulations of getting to Bouvet Island and operating from there. This should be a very interesting talk, Try not to miss it. We also have W2HRU special event station operated by the Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club from LIU/CW Post. Their communication trailer is really something. I am sure they will give you a tour.
Please make sure you have sent in your HOA letter. Go to www.arrl.org/HOA.
2026 is the ARRL “Year of The Clubs”. Please make sure your information and your contact information for your club are correct. This is important, especially when new hams are looking to join your club. The |”Year of The Clubs”, will include special programs and events as well as an updated database. Clubs with more than 70% ARRL members will be recognized. Also please send me some events your clubs are doing so they can be listed in the newsletter. A yearlong special event is in the planning stages now and will be distributed to everyone.
Remember we are not out of the Hurricane season yet. Please keep an eye on the National Weather Service for updates and the Hurricane Watch Net at HWN.org. After Hurricane Season, we must be aware of the Nor’easter’s. They can hit hard. You can get more information at the Skywarn Forum at HRU. ASM John Hale, KD2LPM , does a great job and has a lot of information.
Wishing you and your families a very Happy Thanksgiving! Be safe.

Silent Keys:
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Bartscherer, N1GNV, John would be better known to most of you as John B, owner of Quicksilver Radio. Long after moving from Long Island, John kept his LIMARC membership. John was a regular vendor at every one of our hamfests until illness began to make it more difficult for him. He was generous in his support of our hamfests donating many door prizes and discounting our club needs wherever possible.
John will be missed. If you would like to write any remembrances about John, please send them to webmaster@limarc.org for posting on our website.

Heard Around The Section:
Frequency change for the NYS net. With increasing QRM on 40 meters and improving propagation on 80, the primary frequency for NYS CW net will move to 3569 kHz (plus or minus) effective immediately. There is no guarantee that digital jamming will not be a problem on 3569, they seem to be attracted to cw signals, so we may have to move about to find a clear spot as the situation requires.
NYC ARES participated in the TOTTEN TROT – Sunday October 26, 2025

Operation Santa December 10th. You need to register first
Well, another year has gone by. Once again, we find ourselves involved with the greatest event of the year. Last year was one where I found a few problems with the frequencies that we are using. This is due to many upgrades at the airport and the facilities within the area of hanger #19. We are still going to use UHF. mostly because it goes thru the area with little or no problem. I will be at the meeting at JFK. as soon as it is posted. I will then give everyone all the information that I get. Please go to the web site listed and register for this event. http://WWW.COMMUNITYMAYORS.ORG please remember that if you do not register you will not be able to enter hanger #19.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION

Images Beamed from Space Celebrate 25 Years of Ham Radio on the ISS
11/13/2025
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) will mark two major milestones this month with a special Slow Scan Television (SSTV) event aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Beginning November 12 through November 20, the station will transmit a series of 12 commemorative SSTV images, pausing only for a scheduled educational contact.
The “SSTV Spacetacular” will highlight both the recent World Scouting movement’s Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA) and the 25th anniversary of ARISS ham radio operations on the ISS.
ARISS first went on the air on November 13, 2000, when the ISS Expedition 1 crew made the inaugural ham radio contact using an Ericsson VHF radio. That same year, the first scheduled school contact linked ISS Commander Bill Shepherd, who had call sign KD5GSL, with students at Luther Burbank School in Burbank, Illinois. Since then, ARISS has connected an estimated 200,000 students, educators, and enthusiasts each year with astronauts living and working aboard the orbiting laboratory.
For this month’s event, scouts, educators, students, and amateur radio operators worldwide are invited to receive and decode the transmitted images. Participants can upload their received pictures to the ARISS SSTV gallery to earn a commemorative electronic award certificate.
In ARISS’s most recent SSTV campaign — held in early October to celebrate World Space Week — nearly 9,000 images were submitted by more than 3,600 participants on all continents, including three from Antarctica.
For the latest SSTV schedules, frequencies, and event details, follow ARISS on ARISS Facebook, X and Instagram.
Thanks to ARISS for the information in this news release.
About ARISS
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) is a cooperative venture of international amateur radio societies and the space agencies that support the International Space Station (ISS). In the United States, participants are ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio®, the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), the ISS National Lab-Space Station Explorers, Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC), and NASA’s Space communications and Navigation program. The primary goal of ARISS is to promote exploration of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics topics. ARISS does this by organizing scheduled contacts via amateur radio between crew members aboard the ISS and students. Before and during these radio contacts, students, educators, parents, and communities take part in hands-on learning activities tied to space, space technologies, and amateur radio. For more information, see www.ariss.org.
Update on the HOA Bill
This is a follow-up to our previous efforts. a video produced here at HQ on clubs supporting the HOA bill in congress. Please feel free to distribute this to clubs in your section. I am also sending this to the ACCs.
Club support for the bill is important in that it shows not only individual hams, but organizations support the bill.

Technical Writers Wanted
Hello from ARRL Headquarters in Newington, Connecticut. We’re seeking authors to contribute articles to QST. We always encourage submissions of general interest or technical manuscripts, however for upcoming issues, we’re looking for authors to submit technical manuscripts specifically about their ARRL Field Day and emergency communications experiences. Please see the detailed request attached.
At HQ, we’re hearing that the proliferation of Parks on the Air activators in the ham radio community has influenced the approach clubs are taking as they plan for Field Day or emergency communications activities. POTA activators use antennas that are easy to set up and operate for hours using LiFePO batteries. Is anyone repurposing those setups for Feld Day and EmComm as well?
Think about who you know within your Divisions, Sections, and local clubs who are those influencers and experts and ask them if they’d be interested in writing about their experiences for QST. We want to hear about the innovative and new technologies you’re applying to make the Field Day experience easier and more productive than before.
We’d like people to tell their stories, so encourage those who may not think they can write to submit an article. Our editorial team can work with them on the writing process.
Thank you,
Conrad Trautmann, N2YCH

2025 “Dream Rig” Essay Contest for Young Ham Radio Operators
11/07/2025
Six years ago, the Intrepid-DX Group, a international group of amateur radio operators, began their annual youth “Dream Rig” essay contest as a means to reach young people and interest them in amateur radio.
“This year, rather than our past essays, we are seeking well thought-out and clearly communicated project proposals for a public access amateur radio station,” said Paul S. Ewing, N6PSE, president of The Intrepid-DX Group.
This year’s contest is called “Amateur Radio for the Greater Good.” Written proposals may be submitted between November 10 and December 10, 2025, by amateurs age 25 or younger, describing how they would establish a club, contest, community, or emergency communication station in a school, church, fire station, community center, hospital, or other public building. The station must be in the USA and only US-licensed amateurs may submit proposals.
“This is a departure from our conventional essay contest,” added Ewing. “We are looking for proposals that would place the station in a secure and common area where it could be enjoyed by other licensed amateurs. Once the winning proposal is selected, the proposal author will have sixty days to secure written permission from the owner or guardian of the facility. The written permission must indicate approval for the station and antenna to be installed. The proposal author may be the trustee of the station.”
The equipment provided will include an HF transceiver, VHF/UHF transceiver, 13.8V power supply, two 100′ lengths of coax, and antennas.
The awardee of the complete station will be announced on December 15, 2025.
Proposals may be submitted via email to intrepiddxgroup@gmail.com or via USPS to:
The Intrepid-DX Group
3052 Wetmore Dr.
San Jose, CA 95148
For more information about the Intrepid-DX Group, visit its website at https://intrepid-dx.com.

Special Event Unites Pennsylvania Colleges and Amateur Radio Station W3USR
11/07/2025
The Murgas Amateur Radio Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with a special event that includes the University of Scranton, Kings College, and amateur radio station W3USR. The station is part of the University of Scranton Physics and Engineering Department, a university student club, and a flagship station for the Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation (HamSCI) project.
The event, organized in partnership with the Slovak Heritage Society of Northeast Pennsylvania (NEPA) and the Luzerne County Historical Society, celebrates the November 1905 public unveiling of the Father Murgas tone method, a wireless communication system capable of transmitting voice and sound over long distances and the forerunner of the continuous tone-coded squelch system (CTCSS) and digital-coded squelch (DCS). It was developed and patented by Father Joseph Murgas (PDF). The test included a series of messages exchanged between Father Murgas; then Wilkes-Barre Mayor Frederick C. Kirkendall; then Scranton Mayor Alex T. Connell; and Rev. Michael John Hoban, a former bishop of the Diocese of Scranton.
All of the activity begins at 1:00 PM EST Saturday, November 15. Wilkes-Barre Mayor George C. Brown and Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti will recreate that transmission with King’s College president Rev. Thomas P. Looney and The University of Scranton president Rev. Joseph G. Marina. After the tone method demonstration, W3USR will be on the air for ARRL November Sweepstakes SSB.
All of the events are open to the public. The Murgas Amateur Radio Club is an ARRL Affiliated Club.
