Hello Everyone …..
March 19th at 11:06 PM Spring will officially arrive in the northern hemisphere. This falls on a Tuesday and is the astronomical beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn season in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s also a good time work on your antennas if you need too as the days are getting longer. Don’t forget to update your RF Exposure calculations if you replace or change anything. See https://www.arrl.org/rf-exposure .
We are also less than one month away from the Solar Eclipse and QSO Party. Get on the air and see if propagation changes for you during the eclipse. See more information below….
I had a good time as always at the LIMARC Hamfest 2 weeks ago..The camaraderie was fantastic as always. The vendors, flea market and did reasonable with great items and good prices. Yet there were not as many buyers as in years past. I hope this trend will change for the next LIMARC hamfest which will be outdoors on June 2nd in Bethpage. LIMARC works hard to bring these hamfests to the area hams. If we don’t support them and the vendors, Hamfests will be a thing of the past and I for one don’t want to see them fade away…How about you?
Heard Around the Section:
The Peconic Radio Club had a great Pot Luck Dinner and meeting on March 3rd…..
The Suffolk Radio Club had a great presentation from Ed Efchak – WX2R, the PIO for HamSci.
HamSCI, the Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation, is a platform for the publicity and promotion of projects that are consistent with the following objectives:
- Advance scientific research and understanding through amateur radio activities.
- Encourage the development of new technologies to support this research.
- Provide educational opportunities for the amateur community and the general public….
The Larkfield Amateur Radio Club is starting educational nights as well as a Rag Chew night on Tuesday 7:30 PM on the WR2ABA Repeater System-147.210…
GSBARC has resumed their teaching of Technician classes as well as upgrading their comms trailer and equipment….
ARES UPDATE:
We also will be releasing the first 2 new EmComm courses April 1. Basic EmComm and Intermediate EmComm will be live in the ARRL Learning Center April 1. With the new courses being released the legacy courses will be removed April 1. Anyone who is currently enrolled in EC-001 or EC-016 will need to complete these courses by April 1 to receive credit for them. We hope to have Advanced EmComm and ARES Leadership courses complete by early summer.
All Clubs:
please update your ARRL club page information. The club update area is now active. This section allows you to edit information in your club record and also upload photos of your club activities.
The club update is your annual report. You must update your club record at least once per year even if nothing changes. The club update is how we know that the club is still in business and keeps the contact information current for ARRL and prospective hams to get in touch with your club. Should two years pass without an update your club will be listed as inactive.

SOLAR ECLIPSE QSO PARTY:
The following is an informal introduction to the SEQP. Please visit the full SEQP Rules (https://hamsci.org/node/677) for detailed explanations of all terms, links to useful sites, and just about everything needed to prepare for and operate in the SEQP. The rules also contain details on after-contest scoring and log submission. These FAQs are a brief, informal recap of the actual SEQP rules. In case of any conflicts or questions, the SEQP rules should be considered the definitive resource. The SEQP is but one event within the Festivals of Eclipse Ionospheric Science.
What is a Solar Eclipse QSO Party, and why is it being held?
The Solar Eclipse QSO Party is an opportunity for amateur radio operators (hams) to operate during the October, 2023 and April, 2024 eclipses, before, during and after they pass over North America. Using various modes (CW, voice, and digital), two-way transmissions (QSOs) made during the SEQP will contribute to scientific studies focusing on the ionosphere’s reaction to the eclipse. The studies should lead to a better understanding of the interactions between the Sun, the ionosphere, and radio wave propagation. That research should benefit hams, professional broadcasters, satellite operators and many other users of radio spectrum.
When will the SEQP occur? (Download and open the ICS files below to add the events to your electronic calendar)
- October 14, 2023; 1200-2200 UTC; is the official 2023 SEQP event period.
- April 8, 2024; 1400-2400 UTC; is the official 2024 SEQP event period.
- The SEQPs both starts a few hours before the eclipses begins their transit across the US mainland, so baseline data can be gathered (it is important to know how well the ionosphere is reflecting and refracting high frequency (HF) signals prior to the eclipses)
- They continue through the entire eclipse period, in order to study how HF propagation is affected by the eclipse (past experience suggests that ionospheric changes will be visible in the data).
- They conclude a few hours after the eclipses transit beyond the US mainland, in order to observe and study the after effects of the eclipse (such as ionospheric recovery, if any).
You do not have to operate the full SEQP hour period, though that would be most welcome. If you only have an hour or two, try to schedule your operating when the eclipse path is nearest to your QTH. That will raise the odds that your signals will be affected by the eclipse. Eclipse paths can be seen at https://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/.
Who should participate?
The 2023 and 2024 eclipses will be passing over the continental United States, so researchers are most interested in having hams in North America participate. Of course, HF radio signals don’t generally restrict themselves to small geographic areas, so hams from all over the world are welcome to operate and enter the SEQP.
What equipment is required?
Almost any ham station can participate. An HF radio and antenna(s), usable on one or more of the 160, 80, 40, 20, 15 10 and 6 meter bands.
It is extremely helpful to have contest logging software on a computer in your station. The software guides you through the QSO making process, and it records all of the QSO data needed to submit your results after the SEQP. It is those results which scientists will gather, from you and thousands of other participants, to aid in their research.
What can I expect if I get on the air during the SEQP?
The SEQP, while technically an ‘operating event’, closely mirrors fits the definition of a ‘contest’. It is a friendly competition where participants endeavor to make many contacts in a short period of time, over the widest possible area. QSOs will be short, with specific information (callsigns, signal reports, stations locations) exchanged between stations. If it is your first contest, the first few minutes can be a bit overwhelming, but listen in, learn the operating rhythm, and jump in!
The SEQP encourages operation on CW, SSB and all digital modes. The basic idea is to have as many hams as possible make as many QSOs as possible, then collect their QSO data, carefully studying it for trends indicating how far, how strong and where HF signals propagated vs. the path of the eclipses.
Is there a ‘fun factor’ to the SEQP?
Yes, absolutely! Operating events are supposed to be ‘fun’. One way to increase the fun factor of any contest is to calculate a score for all participates, based on the number of contacts made, their geographic reach, and how many receiving stations heard their signals. The HamSCI Data Processing Team will gather all of the entries submitted on the SEQP website, visit propagation databases such as WSPRNET.org and PSKReporter.info, and assemble millions of data points into a research database. From that database the HamSCI Data Processing Team will be able to assign everyone a score, which will then be published some months after the SEQP.
What if I am not interested in two-way QSOs, but I am a WSPR or FST4W enthusiast?
There is a solar eclipse event for those who are interested in transmitting and receiving WSPR and FST4W signals: The Gladstone Signal Spotting Challenge
Ideally, many WSPR and FST4W transmitters will be on the air for the entire SEQP, their transmissions logged by receivers worldwide (or as far as propagation allows), enabling researchers to search out propagation effects of the solar eclipses as they move across our planet.
If you have questions regarding the Solar Eclipse QSO Party, please send them to hamsci@hamsci.org

Solar Eclipse One Month Away:
03/08/2024
A total solar eclipse that will be seen across North America will occur on Monday, April 8th. It will be the last of its kind in the US for the next 20 years.
Hams across North America are asked to participate in a study about how the ionosphere functions by getting on the air to help scientists in a series of ionospheric experiments.
Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation (HamSCI) has presentations for hams interested in participating on Wednesday, March 27 at 8;00 PM (Eastern) – 5:00 PM (Pacific)*, and that same day at 10:00 PM (Eastern) – 7:00 PM (Pacific)*. Both 30-minute presentations will held on Zoom and they will feature HamSCI’s Festivals of Eclipse Ionospheric Science (FoEIS). The presenters will take your questions during the presentations.
Here is the link to the presentations.
The program will start by covering HamSCI’s basis and purpose, and quickly move into why they are conducting experiments, how hams and shortwave listeners (SWLS) can participate, and what they hope to learn from the event. Along the way, they will discuss why the science behind the event is important to users of the high-frequency radio spectrum – including amateur radio operators!
Learn about the HamSCI’s eclipse-focused operating events:
- Solar Eclipse QSO Party(SEQP)
- Gladstone Signal Spotting Challenge(GSSC)

Bob Heil, K9EID, Silent Key
03/01/2024
The man who defined the sound of live rock ‘n’ roll music and brought audio engineering principals into mainstream amateur radio use, Dr. Bob Heil, K9EID, has passed away at the age of 83. He was an ARRL Life Member and in the ARRL Maxim Society. A Facebook post from Heil Ham Radio paid tribute to their founder: “Bob fought a valiant, yearlong battle with cancer, and passed peacefully surrounded by his family.”
Heil founded Heil Sound in 1966, through which he created the template for modern concert sound systems for musicians like the Grateful Dead, The Who, Joe Walsh, and Peter Frampton. The talk box used on iconic live record Frampton Comes Alive! was of Heil’s design. His audio engineering products have been featured in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and he was honored in 2007 with the Parnelli Audio Innovator Award for his impact on the live sound industry. “My life has been about achieving great sound, whether on the concert stage or in the amateur radio world,” Bob Heil recounted in 2022. “I’ve watched Heil Sound go from a regional sound company to a world-class microphone manufacturer. This company has been my passion,” he said.
Parallel to his commercial and artistic success in live music, was his passion for amateur radio. He was active in ham radio from a young age and merged his expertise in audio engineering with his love for radio. Heil Ham Radio was founded to produce microphones, headsets, and other gear for radio amateurs with an emphasis on high-quality audio.
Heil was known as a mentor who enjoyed helping others find success in ham radio. Recently, his grandson Charlie Hartley, KF0OOP, became a licensed ham to surprise Heil for his birthday. The pair attended the ARRL Midwest Convention/Winterfest in St. Louis, Missouri, on January 27, 2024.
Heil was a generous donor to amateur radio organizations, including ARRL. Recently, he donated a host of new audio gear to the Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Station, W1AW.
His generosity and kind nature will be missed by many, including ARRL Director of Development Kevin Beal, K8EAL. “Bob was a titan in many areas. He was generous with his time, offered keen insights, and had the heart of a philanthropist in the ARRL Maxim Society,” Beal said. “He was a gentleman to his core, making friends easily and everywhere he went, from rock stars to captains of industry. I consider it a real privilege to have become a friend to him, too, all because of amateur radio.”
Heil was known for his passion for AM operations. He served for many years as an on-camera host of the Ham Nation podcast. Tributes to Heil have been flooding social media, including from his co-hosts.
ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR, said Heil’s passing is a significant loss. “Bob Heil’s technical achievements that brought high-quality audio to amateur radio pale in comparison to his generosity and willingness to help his fellow ham. He’s long been known as someone eager to help mentor and teach. His legacy on our hobby will be long-lasting. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.”

On Tuesday, February 20, at ARRL Headquarters, ballots were counted for two Section Manager elections that were conducted this winter.
ARRL members in Louisiana elected Houston Polson, N5YS, of Winnfield, to become the next Section Manager of the ARRL Louisiana Section starting on April 1, 2024. Polson received 200 votes, and incumbent Section Manager Matt Anderson, KD5KNZ, received 169 votes.
Polson was first licensed in 1984, and he has been a member of the Ak-Sar-Ben Amateur Radio Club in Omaha, Nebraska, ever since. He is also a Volunteer Examiner and an active member of the Central Louisiana Amateur Radio Club. Anderson, of Covington, has served as the Section Manager for the ARRL Louisiana Section since August 31, 2023, when he was appointed to fulfill the remainder of the term after John Mark Robertson, K5JMR, stepped down.
In the ARRL Pacific Section, Alan Maenchen, AD6E, was re-elected in a close race by receiving 113 votes. Kevin Bogan, AH6QO, of Honolulu, received 100 votes. Maenchen, of Wailuku, Hawaii, was appointed as Section Manager of the Pacific Section on November 1, 2023, to fulfill the term of office after Joe Speroni, AH0A, stepped down.
The ARRL Georgia Section has a new Section Manager as of January 1, 2024. Hank Blackwood, K4HYJ, of Dalton, Georgia, was the only nominee to run for the re-solicited, 18-month new term of office that is to begin on April 1.
David Benoist, AG4ZR, who continued serving as Section Manager of the Georgia Section beyond the conclusion of his term on September 30, 2023, decided to step down at the end of 2023 to allow Blackwood to officially begin his term of office early. Benoist, of Senoia, was Section Manager from December 2021 through December 2023, and he previously led the Georgia Section’s field organization from November 2016 to September 2021.
The following incumbent Section Managers were unopposed after the fall nomination deadline, and they will begin new, two-year terms of office starting on April 1, 2024: John Fritze, K2QY (Eastern New York); Bob Wilson, W3BIG (Eastern Pennsylvania); Marvin Hoffman, WA4NC (North Carolina); Dave Kaltenborn, N8KBC (San Diego); Chris Stallkamp, KI0D (South Dakota), and Jack Smith, KE4LWT (Virginia).

Amateur Radio Operators Needed for Help with Solar Eclipse Project
02/23/2024
The Case Amateur Radio Club, W8EDU, the club station at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, is asking for amateur radio operators to help with a research project centered around the April 8, 2024, solar eclipse.
W8EDU club member Adam Goodman, W7OKE, said the project centers around studying the effects of the eclipse on propagation to better understand the recombination time of the ionosphere.
“To do this, we are recruiting North American amateur stations interested in recording the Canadian time standard station CHU (Canada’s WWV) for two weeks surrounding the eclipse,” added Goodman. “Anyone with a KiwiSDR or a rig that can interface with analysis/recording software such as Fldigi is encouraged to reach out to us to participate.”
W8EDU club member and project software manager Maris Usis, KE8TXG, said that while the software is simple to use, there is some detailed work involved. “We can help make it easier and there are good online instructions as well,” said Usis.
All of the participation details are on the club’s website at https://w8edu.wordpress.com/chu-eclipse-data-collection/.
W8EDU club faculty advisor David Kazdan, AD8Y, said the research project has received positive attention from the ARRL Collegiate Amateur Radio Program community, the Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation (HamSCI) community, and Case Western Reserve University’s engineering deans. “It is already a truly international effort, and we are collaborating with more than 20 stations across the continent, from collegiate and high school stations, to a representative from the Radio Amateurs of Canada, to a station in Mexico,” said Kazdan.
The 2024 solar eclipse will over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. ARRL is a partner with HamSCI to help promote this opportunity for radio amateurs to participate in an active science experiment, through the Solar Eclipse QSO Party.

Former Vice Director of the ARRL Hudson Division, Bill Hudzik, W2UDT, Silent Key
02/23/2024
Former Vice Director of the ARRL Hudson Division and ARRL Maxim Society Member William “Bill” Hudzik, W2UDT, has passed away at the age of 77.
Hudzik served as Vice Director from 2011 to 2022, and he had previously been Section Manager of the ARRL Northern New Jersey Section.
Hudzik was first licensed in 1961 as WV2UDT, and he was active in VHF contesting at the time.
He quickly gained a reputation as someone willing and able to help. “He was probably one of the most capable people I have ever known. It didn’t matter what you were doing, he knew how to deal with it,” said ARRL Director of Operations Bob Naumann, W5OV. Naumann had known Hudzik for 45 years. “Bill set a very high bar for how to treat people,” he said.
Hudzik served in the military and used his radio skills to help his fellow servicepeople. He spent the holiday season of 1966 – 1967 running phone patches from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, as KR6SP.
Hudzik called himself a “contest junkie” and enjoyed operating in contests from V26B in Antigua and Barbuda. He was part of several high-scoring team activations from the station. He also operated from St. Croix and wrote about the trip for ARRL (see Vacation, Contesting and Friends – Perfect Together).
Hudzik served as Section Manager from 2001 to 2008. He was active in government affairs to advance amateur radio in the Garden State. In 2011, he was appointed to serve as Vice Director of the ARRL Hudson Division. He served in that capacity until an illness forced his retirement in 2022.
ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR, praised the impact Hudzik had on amateur radio. “Bill served ARRL and its members for many years. It was evident from the beginning that he was someone special. He was highly respected, friendly with all, and showed great insight and patience. Bill left a legacy that will be remembered. It was a privilege to have known him,” he said.
ARRL Hudson Division Director Nomar Vizcarrondo, NP4H, says Hudzik’s guidance was invaluable to him as he started in the role. “I am deeply saddened by Bill’s passing. Shortly after he resigned as Vice Director for the Division because of his health and I was appointed to continue his term, Bill reached out and offered me his support and guidance. It was a pleasure and honor to have known him. Board Members at ARRL along with our Hudson Division family are saddened by his passing and acknowledge the great human being and Amateur Radio Operator he was. He will be truly missed. Godspeed W2UDT,” wrote Vizcarrondo.
A celebration of life will be planned in the future.
