Hello Everyone …..
September and October have been very busy months for most of us as we try to finish up the work we wanted to get done before the winter weather sets in. With that said, take some time and look at your antennas, grounds, coax, supports, etc. to make sure they are in good shape for the winter months ahead. Some say this coming winter should be real cold with a lot of snow. I remember my grandmother telling me that you can tell if the winter will be cold by the bushiness of a squirrel’s tail. Hopefully it will be like last year. Don’t forget that we are still in hurricane season with Tropical Storm Sean still lurking in the Atlantic. The season is officially over November 30th but it doesn’t mean that hurricanes can’t pop up after that. Just make sure that you and your family are prepared.
The HRU Committee has completed the paperwork with LIU-Post for HRU 2024 for January 6, 2024 and after 3 years we will be back at a live venue where we can interact with new and old friends. We need some help from clubs and individuals so things can run smoothly. We want this to be an enjoyable event. They are also soliciting speakers for forums. Please contact the committee at https://hamradiouniversity.org/ for further information.

Participating in an ARISS Contact with Valley Stream South High School
ARISS Contact is Scheduled with Students at
Valley Stream South High School, Valley Stream, NY
October XX, 2023—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has received schedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and students at the Valley Stream South High School (VSSHS) in Valley Stream, NY. ARISS conducts 60-80 of these special amateur radio contacts each year between students around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS.
VSSHS, a public middle school and high school, serves 1,260 students in grades 7 through 12. Students follow the faculty’s Science ARISS Lesson Plan covering physics of rocket launches and orbital mechanics, astronomy and satellites, and how amateur radio communications are used on the ISS. Area ham radio operators and VSSHS’s Falcon Report Club will assist with preparations for the ARISS contact; the Falcon Report Club broadcasts weekly TV news reports of school-wide activities.
This ARISS contact will allow students to ask their questions of Astronaut Andreas Mogensen, amateur radio call sign KG5GCZ. The downlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHz and may be heard by listeners in the ISS footprint that encompasses the ARISS radio telebridge station in Casale Monferrato, Italy. The amateur radio volunteer team there will use the callsign IK1SLD to establish and maintain the ISS connection.
The ARISS radio contact is scheduled for October 17, 2023 at 8:25 am EDT (NY) (12:25 UTC, 7:25 am CDT, 6:25 am MDT, 5:25 am PDT).
The public is invited to watch the live stream at https://youtube.com/live/g74NbsTEvVw?feature=share.

Fox (Bunny)Hunting
This was the first hunt Since June 2022. Ken, NN2KC set the radius as 3.5 miles from the Lindenhurst Diner. We had 4 hunting cars. They were: WJ2B solo, WA2SUH with KA2TYC co-pilot, KD2AKX/KD2REK Brian on his first hunt, and NY2A/N2YYC. We all drew up radius maps and noticed that the boundaries included part of the barrier beach, specifically Cedar Beach. So we figured he was likely going to be there. But we had to go through the exercise and concluded after taking readings from the various parks that went down to the bay, that he was at the beach. Joe WJ2B was the only hunter who decided to drive over the Robert Moses Causeway to the beach and found the transmitter near the parking lot. The attached photos from WJ2B show the boundaries, the transmitter location and the camouflaged transmitter. We had another hunt years ago where the boundaries included Gilgo Beach and Andy WA2CDL was the only hunter willing to drive down there. Same deal
We appreciate that Ken volunteered to hide but the group wasn’t excited about his choice of a spot, where you had to drive a long distance out of the boundaries to get to the location. Looking forward to one of Ken’s typical spots in a park or preserve. We went to the Lindenhurst Diner where there was a very long wait to get our food and it wasn’t that great.
Let’s try to have another hunt in October. If anyone would like to try hiding, let me know. I will supply the transmitter. Larry, WA2SUH

NYS QSO Party
New York QSO Party 2023 – Our 15th Year!
On Saturday, October 21st (at 1400z), the 15th annual NY QSO Party will take place. Come celebrate our 15th anniversary on the air with us.
Since the NYQP restart in 2009, we have experienced tremendous growth, not only in the number of entries, but also the total activity (QSO’s made) on a year-over-year basis. The 2023 event will be no different, with a great set of awards for all entry categories, plus special rookie and youth awards as well.
Our mobiles and portable stations will take to the roads and fields to activate all of the 62 NY counties once again, with pileups sure to follow. Will 2023 be the year that someone finally works a County Sweep? Some have been close, but no operator has yet to achieve a sweep. With high activity and great propagation due to enhanced sunspots, this may be the year!
Plan to join us, starting at 1400z Saturday until 0200z Sunday, on all bands, including VHF. The full rules (updated for 2023), results from previous years, county data, planned activations and more can be found at www.nyqp.org

WestFest STEM Event Offers Hands-On Experience
10/06/2023
Amateur radio was represented at the seventh annual WestFest event at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, September 30, 2023. WestFest is a public engagement event that highlights science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) research, sustainability initiatives, and outreach programs at The Ohio State University. The event featured three behind-the-scenes tours and 39 activity booths.
The Amateur Radio and RF Club at The Ohio State University, W8LT, and the All Things Amateur Radio Association, W8ATR, provided information and hands-on STEM experiences for nearly 400 attendees. The W8ATR Mobile STEM Trailer, funded by a grant from the ARRL Foundation, included a CW oscillator, a display about the history of Morse code, and signage explaining the history of wireless technology and radios. Three Snap Circuits® stations were set up for visitors to build an FM radio, and there was a working replica of a spark-gap transmitter. The trailer also featured a complete amateur station with a telescoping mast and a quarter-wave vertical ground-plane antenna.
“It’s important to have amateur radio [be] a part of the STEM experience,” said Lawrence L. Feth, PhD, Professor Emeritus and Faculty Advisor to W8LT.
ATARA Activities Director Diane Warner, KE8HLD, said throughout the day the STEM trailer hosted 52 adults and 80 children. “Watching the children’s faces as they experience the sounds and sights of amateur radio technology is aways rewarding,” she said.
Additional information about WestFest is available at The Ohio State University website.

ARRL Urges Comments to FCC on 60-Meter Band
The ARRL is asking that all radio amateurs urge the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) to continue the existing use of the
60-meter band. A public comment period is open until October 30,
- ARRL encourages expressions of support to the FCC for the
current 100 W ERP power limit (instead of reducing the power limit
to 15 W EIRP) and continuing secondary access to the current
channels.
To submit a filing of your comments for the FCC’s consideration in
the rulemaking process, go to the FCC web page for the Notice of
Proposed Rulemaking’s (NPRM) Docket Number 23-120 at,
https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/search/docket-detail/23-120.
If you wish to directly enter your comments, select the button
labeled SUBMIT AN EXPRESS FILING at,
https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings/express?proceeding5d=23-120 .
If you are uploading a document that contains your comments, select
SUBMIT A STANDARD FILING at,
https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings/standard?proceeding5d=23-120 .
When submitting your comments, be sure the correct proceeding’s
docket number, 23-120, is included on the form. Your name and
comments will be entered into the official public record of the
proceedings and will be viewable by anyone who visits the docket web
page.
While radio amateurs are encouraged to include any comments they
would like in their submissions, they’re especially encouraged to
draw upon their personal experiences using the 60-meter band for
public service purposes and for its location between the amateur 80-
and 40-meter bands, which is critical to ensuring signal propagation
to certain geographic areas during variations in time and the solar
cycle.
Some of the main points to comment on for this NPRM are:
* Urging the FCC to keep the four existing channels allocated to
amateur radio on a secondary basis.
* Urging the FCC to keep the 100 W power limit for the four existing
channels and the new 15 kHz subband.
ARRL Public Relations and Outreach Manager Sierra Harrop, W5DX,
underscored the importance of commenting, urging members to speak
- “ARRL members make up the strongest voice in matters of amateur
radio spectrum defense,” said Harrop. “Your membership and
participation in the rulemaking process both ensure ARRL continues
to make the difference when our band privileges are threatened.
Please join us in effort to protect our 60-meter band privileges.”

ARLX013 Solar Eclipse QSO Party Seeks Amateurs and Radio Enthusiasts
for Global Experiment
ARRL is proud to partner with HamSCI to help promote participation
in the Solar Eclipse QSO Party (SEQP). SEQPs are a series of global
experiments — and you can be a part of them. Solar eclipses will
pass across the continental United States on October 14, 2023, and
April 8, 2024.
During these celestial events, you can join thousands of fellow
amateurs as part of the largest crowd-sourced event for ham radio
scientific exploration. The SEQP is part of the Festivals of Eclipse
Ionospheric Science and is for learning more about how the
ionosphere works.
All radio amateurs need to do is operate using any mode and any band
for all or part of the day, then upload their logs. Participation
can be from anywhere; you don’t need to be near the path of the
eclipse to contribute valuable data. You don’t even have to be a
licensed ham to participate in the experiment (only to transmit).
For SEQP contest and rules, visit
https://www.hamsci.org/contest-info .
For information on the Gladstone Signal Spotting Challenge using CW,
WSPR, and FST4W, go to https://www.hamsci.org/contest-info .
If you’re an SWL or AM DXer, you might be interested in the Medium
Wave Recording Event. Go to https://www.hamsci.org/mw-recordings/
for more information . Or just get on the air and help provide data
to better understand the ionosphere.
The first SEQP is on Saturday, October 14, 2023, from 1200 – 2200
UTC, and participants may use any band or mode (except WARC bands).
Researchers will take the submitted logs and work to derive
meaningful observations from the data.
ARRL members can find out more about the SEQP by reading “The Solar
Eclipse QSO Party: A Fun Way to Support Radio Science” in the
September/October 2023 issue of On the Air magazine. The On the Air
podcast will feature the article’s author, Gary Mikitin, AF8A,
talking about the event. The episode will go live on October 12.

Students Wanted: Talk to an Astronaut via Amateur Radio in 2024!
09/29/2023
There’s an opportunity for STEM education via amateur radio that will put students in contact with astronauts. The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program is seeking formal and informal education institutions and organizations, individually or working together, to host an amateur radio contact with a crew member aboard the International Space Station (ISS). ARISS anticipates that the contacts will be held between July 1 and December 31, 2024. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact dates.
To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. The voice-only radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes long and allow students to interact with the astronauts through a question-and-answer session. Students also have an opportunity to learn about satellite communication, wireless technology, and radio science.
The deadline to submit a proposal is November 10, 2023. Proposal information and more details, such as expectations, proposal guidelines, and the proposal form, can be found at www.ariss.org. An ARISS proposal webinar session will be held on October 5, 2023, at 7 PM ET. Visit https://ariss-proposal-webinar-fall-2023.eventbrite.com sign up.
ARISS is a cooperative venture of international amateur radio societies and the space agencies that support the ISS. In the US, participating organizations include NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation program (SCaN), the ISS National Laboratory — Space Station Explorers, ARRL, and AMSAT.
