Hello everyone,
I hope everyone is enjoying the fall weather.
Start checking your antennas for winter reliability. We had a Nor’easter a few weeks ago which challenged some of the south shore areas with flooding. We had some high winds and approx. 5 inches of rain across the island. Trees and branches were down causing power outages. Time to double check your equipment that its ready to go if you need to evacuate or get called into service.
Club officers, make sure that your club’s information is updated with the correct information on the Big Club ARRL website. It’s very important that you do so you get updated information from the league.
I received an interesting letter regarding “Estate Planning”. Take a look and consider.
Dear Jim,
Ham radio operators dedicate decades to building remarkable stations — rare equipment, meticulously documented collections, and technical libraries that reflect a lifetime of passion. Yet far too often, when an operator becomes a Silent Key, that legacy is lost: family members with no knowledge of amateur radio are left to sort through equipment they cannot identify, value, or sell — and the community loses irreplaceable gear.
Signal & Legacy was built specifically to solve this problem. We are a specialized estate planning service for the amateur radio community — the only firm in the country focused exclusively on helping licensed operators protect, document, and transition their stations and collections as part of a comprehensive estate plan.
What we do for the operators you serve:
Station Inventory & Valuation — Professional documentation of equipment, antennas, test gear, and collections with fair market values that stand up for estate and insurance purposes.
Estate Plan Integration — We coordinate directly with the operator’s estate planning attorney to ensure the station is addressed properly in the will, trust, or beneficiary designations.
Succession Planning — Help operators designate who receives their equipment, who buys at fair value, and how a club or the wider community might benefit from donated gear.
Silent Key Transition Support — When the time comes, we guide families through the process so nothing is lost, discarded, or undersold.
As ARRL Section Manager for NYC-Long Island, you have a unique relationship with the operators you serve. When members ask what happens to their station — or when a family contacts you after losing a loved one — Signal & Legacy is the resource you can point them to with confidence. There is no cost to refer, and we will treat every operator you send our way with the respect their lifetime of service to amateur radio deserves.
I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly — whether to answer questions, provide materials you can share with your members, or discuss how we might best serve the operators in your area.
Ready to connect? Visit us at www.signalandlegacy.com and complete the brief contact form — we will follow up personally within one business day.

From the ARRL:
Radio Amateurs Prepare for Hurricane Isaias
10/07/2026
Updated Friday, October 9, 2026 @ 10 AM EDT
Update – Oct. 9, 1330 UTC
The Hurricane Watch Net is up and running on both 14.325 and 7.268 MHz due to propagation conditions. Hurricane Isaias has increased in strength to Category 3 with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour, making it a major hurricane as it continues to head toward the Florida panhandle and Alabama coast. Landfall is expected overnight tonight.
Hurricane warnings are in effect from Ocean Springs, Mississippi to the Bay/Gulf County line in Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center. WX4NHC, the center’s amateur radio station, will be on the air as of 6 PM Eastern time today (2200 UTC), monitoring the Hurricane Watch Net frequencies, as well as the VoIP Hurricane Net (IRLP node 9219 / EchoLink WX-TALK Conference node 7203 http://www.voipwx.net/), according to WX4NHC Assistant Coordinator Julio Ripoll, WD4R. Ripoll says WX4NHC will also be monitoring WinLink and online reports, which may be sent to WX4NHC@winlink.org, using //WL2K in the subject line. Surface reports may also be emailed to wx4nhc@wx4nhc.org.
Updated Thursday, October 8, 2026 @ 3 PM EDT
Update: Hurricane Watch Net to Activate Friday Morning
The following information is from Hurricane Watch Net Manager Bobby Graves, KB5HAV.
The Hurricane Watch Net (HWN) will activate Friday morning October 9, 2026, at 8:30 AM EDT (1230 UTC. Due to poor 20-meter propagation in recent days, HWN plans to operate on both 20 and 40 meters.
Operating Frequencies
20 Meters — 14.325 MHz USB
Operations will begin at 8:30 AM EDT (1230 UTC) Friday and continue on this frequency as long as propagation permits. If continued operations are needed, HWN will resume on 20 meters at 8:00 AM EDT Saturday.
40 Meters — 7.268 MHz LSB
Operations will begin at 8:30 AM EDT (1230 UTC) Friday. HWN normally concludes 40-meter operations at 7:00 AM ET to accommodate the Waterway Net. Once that net has concluded, and if continued operations are necessary, HWN will resume 40-meter operations Saturday morning.
During activations, HWN collects and relays measured or estimated weather information directly to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center. Requested reports include:
- Maximum sustained winds and gusts
- Wind direction
- Barometric pressure
- Rainfall amounts and duration
- Storm surge
- Damage assessments
- Other significant information that helps forecasters understand conditions on the ground
HWN also handles Health and Welfare traffic and provides backup communications for Emergency Operations Centers, Red Cross shelters, and other agencies, including critical damage-assessment information as requested.

Original news story, Wednesday, October 7, 2026
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued public advisories for Tropical Storm Isaias, which is forecast to pass north of the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday, October 8, 2026, and approach the U.S. northern Gulf Coast on Friday. Landfall is anticipated late Friday night into Saturday morning. ARRL North Florida Section Emergency Coordinator Arc Thames, W4CPD, who also serves as the Amateur Radio Liaison for the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM), reports that the state Emergency Operations Center and county EOCs in potentially impacted areas will begin activating Friday morning, including their amateur radio emergency communications teams. Thames asks amateurs to give priority to nets and emergency traffic related to the storm.
Emergency communications teams will use frequencies listed in the National Interoperability Field Operations Guide (NIFOG), as needed and based on propagation: 3750 or 3985 kHz LSB; 7060, 7240, or 7290 kHz LSB; and 14300, 18160, or 21360 kHz USB. NIFOG advises that emergency communications networks in North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean are encouraged to establish operations within ±20 kHz of these frequencies.
“These activations are few and far between, and I urge all amateurs to pause their casual communications for a night and a morning to allow us to check on and ensure the safety of the impacted areas,” said Thames. “Our team works very hard to only activate and keep nets running shortly before and after the storm until we determine if traditional communications methods have been impacted.”
The Hurricane Watch Net (HWN) is also monitoring the development and forecast track of Isaias. Based on the present forecast, HWN has made tentative plans to activate on Friday morning at 8:30 AM EDT (1230 UTC). Operations are planned on both 20 and 40 meters; 14325 kHz USB, and 7268 kHz LSB. During activations, HWN collects and relays measured or estimated weather information directly to NHC forecasters. Any changes to these tentative plans will be posted at www.hwn.org and on HWN’s Facebook and X social-media pages.
In coordination with the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN), HWN also handles health-and-welfare traffic before, during, and after the storm, and is prepared to provide backup communications for EOCs, Red Cross shelters, and other official agencies, and to relay significant damage-assessment information to government and NGO partners as requested.
Follow also the VoIP Hurricane Net and WX4NHC, the amateur radio station at the National Hurricane Center, which will be activated and monitoring the nets.

Remembering Four Silent Keys
09/27/2026
We are saddened to report this week on the passing of four well-known amateurs, including two members of the extended “ARRL family.”
Longtime ARRL Rhode Island Section Manager Robert George “Bob” Beaudet, W1YRC, became a Silent Key on September 10, 2026, at age 88. An ARRL Life Member, Gold-Level Diamond Club member, and Maxim Society member in the President Class, Beaudet served as Rhode Island Section Manager from 2002 to 2023. In 2020, the ARRL Board of Directors recognized his contributions to the Field Organization with the Knight Distinguished Service Award. An ARRL Volunteer Examiner, Bob took part in over 340 license exam sessions, and was a long-serving member of the DX Advisory Committee. Just a week before his passing, the nursing home where he’d lived since 2025 reported on Facebook about a carefully-organized “jailbreak” in late July, in which Bob was able to briefly return home and once again take to the airwaves as W1YRC, joining a Wednesday night net with more than 40 other Rhode Island hams. Current Rhode Island Section Manager Mike Corey, KI1U, noted in an email that “amateur radio in Rhode Island owes a lot to Bob.” Read the full obituary.
Perry T. Green, WY1O, of Winsted, Connecticut, is also now a Silent Key. A U.S. Army Veteran, he passed away on September 14, 2026, at age 79. Perry was on the ARRL Headquarters staff from 2002 to 2017. He was Assistant Manager of the ARRL VEC Department and had served as a member of the Question Pool Committee for the National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators. ARRL VEC Manager Maria Somma, AB1FM, recalled that “Perry had a special gift for connecting with people. He built lasting personal relationships with many of our Volunteer Examiners and customers and … made people feel welcome and appreciated.” Somma added that Green’s “dedication, kindness, and ability to connect with others made him a valued colleague and important part of the ARRL VEC team.” An obituary is available.
Charles “Uncle Chuck” Lee Wyrick, N1UC, of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, became a Silent Key on September 1, 2026, at age 82. An ARRL member, he was a longtime employee of Ham Radio Outlet (HRO), joining the staff there in 1989. He was the company’s National Operations Manager from 2007 until his retirement in 2017. According to the HRO website, Wyrick was responsible for bringing the company “into the 21st century” by implementing a networked point-of-sale application which connected all HRO stores and allowed sharing of sales and inventory control data among all locations. Chuck was also an active satellite operator and was a control operator of the AO-27 satellite. Read the full obituary.
Doug Hendricks, KI6DS, passed away on September 18, 2026. A co-founder of the NorCal QRP Club and founder/owner of Hendricks QRP Kits, he helped start and fuel the popularity of kit-building among QRP (low power) enthusiasts. Hendricks was also a long-time master of ceremonies for the OzarkCon QRP conference and a regular presenter at Four Days in May, the QRP gathering that precedes the Dayton Hamvention® each year. Off the ham bands, Doug taught science and math, and coached basketball, at Dos Palos High School in California, where he was responsible for more than 300 victories and the school’s first-ever league championship.
ARRL sends condolences to the families and friends of these four leaders of the amateur radio community.

Will RADE Be the Next SSB?
09/25/2026
It’s been a half century since single sideband (SSB) supplanted amplitude modulation (AM) as the most popular voice mode on HF, due largely to its spectrum efficiency, occupying roughly half the bandwidth of an AM signal. Now, there’s a new digital voice mode from FreeDV called Radio Autoencoder, or RADE, that occupies half the bandwidth of an SSB signal and reportedly provides more natural-sounding speech. According to Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC), which funded research that advanced RADE’s development, “FreeDV RADE combines machine learning with classical digital signal processing (DSP) and can operate at signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) as low as -2 dB. Its design also addresses spectrum use, speech quality, and power efficiency, all important considerations for voice communications over HF.”
Most significantly, ARDC reports that manufacturers are beginning to integrate the mode directly into their radios, starting with a module that can be downloaded and installed on certain FlexRadio models. Users of other transceivers may run the mode through computers connected to their radios. More details are available from FreeDV and on the ARDC website.

FCC and HHS Initiate New Proceedings on RF Exposure
09/25/2026
ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio® is following two new federal proceedings concerning radio frequency (RF) exposure. On September 17, 2026, the FCC and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) initiated parallel comment periods on RF safety issues. Neither inquiry changes the current FCC RF exposure rules that apply to all radio amateurs but could lead to changes in later proceedings if the current rules are found to be deficient.
The FCC’s Public Notice is narrowly focused on specific RF exposure issues remanded to the Commission in 2021 by the U.S. Court of Appeals. The Commission emphasizes that it will give particular weight to submissions reflecting specialized expertise in health and safety matters. The HHS Request for Information (see also HHS press release) broadly seeks evidence and information concerning the potential health effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs), RF radiation, and wireless technologies.
Comments on the HHS inquiry are due October 21, with comments on the FCC issues due by October 22.
The current rules governing RF exposure took effect on May 3, 2021, and are discussed in the September 2021 and May 2023 issues of QST. The ARRL website features additional information, including an RF exposure calculator, the RF Safety section from the 100th Edition of The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications, an explanatory video, FAQs, and more. ARRL has made these resources available to everyone in the amateur radio community without regard to membership. ARRL urges all licensees to stay compliant and safe.
