*************************************************************************

Hello everyone:

Congratulations and welcome aboard to our new Section Youth Coordinator Ben Piecora, K2CPU. Ben holds a General License and belongs to Great South Bay Radio Club and Islip ARES. Ben was instrumental in the last ARIS contact from the Central Islip High School. He also runs their computer net. He is a very knowledgeable young man and will be an asset to the Section and Amateur Radio community.

SEC Bob Jordan, KD2BQM advised me of some leadership changes in the NYC District.

We would like to welcome our new ARES leadership members for the NYC District:

NYC District  Emergency Coordinator

Donni Katzovicz (W2BRU)

Donni holds a General ticket and is a member of the ARRL and Kings County ARES.  He is a Support Engineer at JW Player, the world’s largest network-independent video platform Outside of work, you can find him enjoying the outdoors or preparing for his upcoming wedding to his beautiful fiancée, Hannah. Donni hopes to utilize his technical and media experience to modernize the District and increase public understanding of and access to amateur radio.

NYC Asst District Emergency Coordinator

Martin Grillo (W1EMR)

Martin is a member of the ARRL and Queens County ARES.  He has a General ticket with Radar Endorsement PG-GB-063396 FCC.  He was cited as EMS Communications Specialist of the Year  in 2011 by the Regional EMS Council of NYC, and is also a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Services.

Manhattan/Bronx Emergency Coordinator

Lloyd Westerman, (K2JVX)

Lloyd enjoys dx’ing and local rag chew on 80 to 17 meters as well as 2 meters and 70cm.  He has garnered the following awards: WAS, Continents of the World, US counties and Grid2.  In addition to being a member of Manhattan ARES, he is also a member of ARRL, KCARC, OMARC, OMISS and ECARS.  His interest in ARES springs from the dramatic loss of communications after  911 and Sandy.   He hopes to foster self-sufficiency in portable ops and interoperability with other first responding agencies including the Red Cross

I would also like to thank former DEC Jose Lugo, W2ACS, for all his dedication and hard work. Unfortunately Jose’s job requires him to travel a lot and he can’t dedicate enough time. Safe travels…..

I will be making the rounds for Field Day this year to all the Clubs that have put their station locators on the ARRL Field Day map. If you have not done so yet please go to http://www.arrl.org/field-day-locator  . I wish everyone success and good weather for Field Day …see you there…

For all Clubs…Please list your events in the NYC / LI web page at http://nli.arrl.org  we would like to see more participation ……….

The Jamming repeaters and malicious interference is still a very big problem in the Section with that said if you are experiencing any issues, please go to either the following websites and fill out a short report   http://nli.arrl.org/end-hudson-jamming.html or http://hudson.arrl.org/end-hudson-jamming/ …………

From the ARRL:

ARLX009 ARRL Business Services Manager Debra Jahnke, K1DAJ (SK)

ARRL Business Services Manager Deb Jahnke, K1DAJ, of Colchester,
Connecticut, died on May 17 after a lengthy illness. She was 66 and
had been on the ARRL Headquarters staff for nearly 40 years,
starting as a file clerk. She went on to serve as Deputy Circulation
Manager, Circulation Manager, Publication Sales and Warehouse
Manager, and as Business Services Manager (including Advertising).
She met her husband of 31 years, ARRL Contest Branch Manager Bart
Jahnke, W9JJ, at Headquarters.

“This is a tremendous loss for the ARRL,” said ARRL CEO Barry
Shelley, N1VXY. “Those of us who knew Deb will miss her remarkable
spirit and direct approach to both the work of the ARRL and life.
Deb loved the outdoors, including sharing time with family in her
flower garden, and with their dogs and her rescue horses.”

She enjoyed the fall foliage, and one of her favorite places to
visit was Harkness Memorial State Park on the Connecticut shoreline
in Waterford.

For many years, she was a fixture at Hamvention(r) and at other
major Amateur Radio shows, organizing and overseeing the operation
of ARRL’s exhibit and store. Deb Jahnke attended Newington High
School and Central Connecticut State University.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by their daughters
Samantha and Ashley. No public services are planned at this time.

The family has requested that contributions be made in Debra
Jahnke’s name to the American Cancer Society, the Shriners Hospitals
for Children, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Friends may
leave remembrances on the Belmont Funeral Home site at,

ARLS005 Amateur Radio Transponders on Planned Chinese Satellites to
Include HF

China’s Amateur Radio Satellite organization, CAMSAT, has released
some details of three new Amateur Radio satellites that could be
launched as early as September. Two of the satellites, CAS-5A and
CAS-6, will carry transponders, and one of them will have HF
capability.

CAS-5A is a 6U CubeSat. It will have an HF/HF (21/29 MHz) mode
linear transponder; an HF/UHF (21/435 MHz) mode linear transponder;
an HF CW telemetry beacon; VHF/UHF mode linear transponder; a
VHF/UHF mode FM transponder; a UHF CW telemetry beacon, and UHF
AX.25 4,000/9,600-baud GMSK Telemetry. Transponders will have 30 kHz
passbands, except for the H/U unit, which will be 15 kHz.

The tiny CAS-5B, weighing 1/2 kilogram, will be deployed from CAS-5A
in orbit. It will carry a UHF CW beacon on an Amateur Radio
frequency. It will be placed into a 539 x 533 kilometer, 97.5-degree
orbit.

CAS-5A/B will launch from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.

CAS-6, a 50-kilogram microsat, will include a VHF CW telemetry
beacon; a U/V mode 20 kHz linear transponder, and AX.25 4,800-baud
GMSK telemetry downlink. It will also carry an atmospheric wind
detector and other systems that will operate on non-amateur
frequencies.

A launch at sea is planned for CAS-6 from the China Academy of
Launch Vehicle Technology. The microsat will be placed into a 579 x
579 kilometer, 45-degree orbit.

CAMSAT has applied to the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU)
to coordinate frequencies for all three spacecraft.

Reverse Beacon Network Beta Testing Separate Spot Stream for FT8

As a beta test, the popular Reverse Beacon Network (RBN) has announced that it’s now offering a separate telnet feed for FT8 spots (telnet.reversebeacon.net port 7001), in addition to the current spot feed (telnet.reversebeacon.net port 7000), which will be repurposed to handle only CW and RTTY spots. In addition, a beta version of Aggregator Version 5 that can handle FT8 spots received from WSJT-X will be available on the RBN website, with instructions on how RBN node operators can configure their nodes to spot FT8 call signs on one or more bands; this will not interfere with the ability to spot CW and RTTY call signs, the RBN team assured in its announcement, explaining its reasoning for the move. The beta test follows a limited alpha test aimed at getting a feel for the spot load and other implications of carrying FT8 spots on the RBN.

“The most striking characteristic of FT8 spots is their sheer quantity,” the RBN announcement said, citing weekday statistics from May 23 and 24 when FT8 spots represented 86% and 87% of all spots, respectively, while CW spots were 13% and 14%, respectively, and RTTY spots were below 1%. Throughput on both days totaled some 30,000 spots.

“Whether due to the startling popularity of the new mode, or to the ability to spot stations at 22 dB below the noise level, it seems obvious that adding FT8 spots to our spot flow could have a huge impact on the infrastructure of the RBN,” the RBN announcement said. “These numbers suggest that if only 20 – 30 RBN nodes added FT8 spots, those spots could outnumber the total CW and RTTY spots being delivered by the 140 – 150 nodes currently active on the network, doubling the total required throughput.”

The RBN team said it wanted to find out whether RBN servers would be up to the task before the fall contest season. “Operators of ‘retail’ DX clusters are encouraged to offer the option of RBN spots with and without FT8 spots, as they now often give users a choice between spot streams with and without Skimmer spots, and to advertise when they begin to carry FT8 spots,” the announcement said.

A beta version of Aggregator Version 5 that can handle FT8 spots received from WSJT-X will be available on the RBN website, along with instructions on how RBN node operators can configure their nodes to spot FT8 signals on one or more bands.

“We will closely monitor how the RBN servers handle this new load, as more and more nodes begin sending FT8 spots,” the announcement said, adding that the RBN reserves the right to take any necessary steps to protect the core mission of the RBN, including shutting off the FT8 stream on major CW and RTTY contest weekends or discontinuing FT8 spotting altogether. Even then, PSKReporter would continue to carry FT8 spots, the announcement pointed out.

“We hope we’re not doing this in a vacuum,” the RBN team said, noting that it’s been collecting the views of contesters and DXers, “and we think that we’re headed in the right direction.”

The RBN team consists of KM3T, N4ZR, PY1NB, SV3SJ, and W3OA.

ARLB012 New Section Managers Elected in Five ARRL Sections

Five new ARRL Section Managers have been declared elected to begin
their first terms of office on July 1. Section Manager (SM) election
ballots were counted in the Indiana and Northern Florida Sections on
May 22 at ARRL Headquarters. Other candidates faced no opposition
during the spring election cycle.

In Indiana, James “Jimmy” Merry, KC9RPX, of Ellettsville, was
declared elected in a very close race with Brian G. Jenks, W9BGJ,
the Indiana Section Traffic Manager. Merry received 451 votes, and
Jenks, of Fort Wayne, received 438 votes.

Merry has been the Affiliated Club Coordinator in Indiana since
2005, and is presently serving a fifth term as president of the
Bloomington Amateur Radio Club. Incumbent Indiana SM Brent Walls,
N9BA, decided not to run for another term after helming the Indiana
Field Organization since July 2016.

In Northern Florida, Kevin Bess, KK4BFN, outpolled Scott Roberts,
KK4ECR, 564 to 447, to succeed current SM Steve Szabo, WB4OMM. Bess,
of Edgewater, is a Northern Florida Assistant Section Manager, and a
member of the Daytona Beach CERT Amateur Radio Team and of the
Florida Contest Group. Szabo opted not to run for a third term of
office after serving since July 2014.

Oregon also will get a new Section Manager this summer. David Kidd,
KA7OZO, of Oregon City, was the sole candidate for the post. He has
been an Emergency Coordinator and Assistant Section Emergency
Coordinator. Kidd will take the reins of the Oregon Section from
John Core, KX7YT, of Portland, who did not run for a new term after
serving for the past 2 years.

In the East Bay Section, Jim Siemons, W6LK, will begin an 18-month
term as SM on July 1. Because no candidates were nominated by the
September 8, 2017, deadline, nominations were resolicited. Siemons,
of Walnut Creek, California, was the only nominee to succeed
incumbent SM Jim Latham, AF6AQ, of Livermore, who has served as East
Bay Section Manager since 2008 and did not run for a new term.

In New Mexico, Bill Mader, K8TE, of Rio Rancho, will become the new
SM there in July. He, too, was the only candidate after nominations
had to be resolicited, and he will serve an 18-month term. He
follows incumbent SM Ed James, KA8JMW, of Edgewood, who did not run
again after serving since 2015.

Several incumbent Section Managers were unopposed for new 2-year
terms starting on July 1. They are Ron Morgan, AD9I (Illinois); Bill
Crowley, K1NIT (Maine); Jim Kvochick, K8JK (Michigan); Paul Gayet,
AA1SU (Vermont), and Patrick Moretti, KA1RB (Wisconsin).
